Intel Math Kernel Libraries for Future Projects?

Dear WCG Administrator/Technician/Developer/Project Manager/Architect...to whom it may concern.

Please keep in mind for any future projects, if the Intel Math Kernel Libraries can be utilized.

If so, and if the libraries can be implemented into the project, I'd consider getting one of these cards.

There may be too few users who would be interested in this and that might make it not worthwhile to implement libraries into project but this is just fyi.

(I'd be willing to talk to Clearspeed about any volume discounts if anyone else out there might be interested.)

Thanks,

Re: Intel Math Kernel Libraries for Future Projects?

The relevant quote from the page you have linked to is:
Details on product availability of the ClearSpeed CSX600 and support will be released in Q4 of 2005.

Using Search for ClearSpeed and BLAS I located the following threads, the first 3 of which were made by dreplogle:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2406
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2407
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2988#19110
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2467#15481

I am still wondering about the price, but I notice that they are now talking about a PCI Express card rather than PCI-X, so things have been changing.

I am not current on compiler technology, but I understand that Intel is perhaps the most efficient Math Library, but identifies the Athlon 64 as other and reverts to basic x86 code. There is at least one AMD-aware math library almost as efficient that is not licensed to run on Intel's latest (though it produces the code to do so very efficiently). And the Linux compilers are mostly far less efficient.

I expect that the WCG programming staff is completely up to date on all this and very well informed. I am certain that they know where to get any information that they lack. In short, they are in a position to give the application programmers very good advice on which compilers to use

But this brings up a related issue. The World Community Grid is not just taking completed programs and boarding them to use in our cluster. We are working with applicants in early stages of preparing a project proposal. Ideally, we would like to offer advice on program design to scientists who have just formulated a research project that fits our requirements.

The very start of program design is the point at which the greatest efficiency can be built into the program, even if it is not completed and verified until 18 months later. So if any member knows of a research project being developed that could benefit humanity and use the computer power that we offer, please inform the researchers where they can submit a proposal: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/submit_a_proposal.html

The initial proposal application does not have to be a completely filled out form to draw a response from the World Community Grid.

Once we have some firm numbers for the CSX600, we might very well recommend that the researchers develop and test on it for speed, in which case it would be easy to board the program so that it was CSX600-aware. But this all seems to lie in the future.

I would not advise any member to buy a CSX600 card on speculation. And remember - - prices drop quickly in this field.

angel
Sorry I keep sounding like such a wet blanket. smile
But the tremendous speed that ClearSpeed promises is still on paper. Things will become clearer once there is an actual product to check over. Maybe next year we will be really excited about this.

But until we can get some third-party reviews ... sleep
Stay well,

Clearspeed CSX600 Advantage Accelerator board puts up big numbers at SC05 How Cool is that! biggrin

Dear WCG Administrator/Technician/Developer/Project Manager/Architect...to whom it may concern

1. Can you tell me if the next project, (HIV/AIDS project) will be able to take advantage of this board?

2. If it can, can you estimate how long the HIV project will last?

Thank you,

dreplogle
