Are all the 'invalid' results still usefull or does the file itself become corrupted? Zero credit would not be my first concern at this point but I do care if a (large) part of this new project turns out to be a waste of energy before the problem is solved.

Hi guys,
I came in here because I also noticed an invalid for my first 2 FA@H2 workunits. I usually have the network function suspended as I like to upload everything at once. It hasn't been a problem for me when crunching in the past but FA@H2 doesn't seem to like it . Will try again with the network enabled this time ![]() |

Greetings everyone,
Thank you for the initial report and detailed ways to recreate it. I have implemented a fix on our end that will hopefully resolve this issue and get more results validated. The basic problem was that during intermediate uploads, the files were not compressed when sent back to our server. Which is how we planned for them because the larger of the two files is binary and doesn't compress much. However, when BOINC completes a work unit, it compresses the intermediate upload flies and they were not comparing matching part of the trickle messages coming back from members. The fix is server side, and expect to see more results turning valid from this. Thanks, -Uplinger |

So will offline results eventually get validated or not?

Unfortunately with the way things are on the system, I can not go back and validate older work units, this would disrupt generation of work units. This is a change going forward. Members should see a lot fewer invalids because of the changes to the trickle message handler.
Thanks, -Uplinger |

I left BOINC running this morning while I was out working but I found that internet connectivity had been lost. Even though some trickle message uploads had been sent from the workunits in question beforehand they were still marked invalid because of the disconnection. I wasn't even partially credited for the actual CPU time & power wasted on said units which is a little disappointing. I hope the server-side modifications work out for the better

Never come across this before in my 8+ years at WCG, no other BOINC projects do this, do they ?
----------------------------------------I now have 21 Invalids , a waste of science and a waste of power and money - I don't want the points but the hours towards a badge is useful .. and the chances of that are, oh well ... [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 23, 2015 12:23:33 PM] |

No project but WCG give full time credit and half points for invalids, that is if the time did get logged, but if it shows on the Result Status pages, then you would normally get credit. [It, time, seems to occasionally get lost in transition.]

[It, time, seems to occasionally get lost in transition.] Interesting in that it didn't initially show any credit on the invalids but I got up this morning to find credit granted. What causes the actual delay in credit being granted? ![]() |

Members should see a lot fewer invalids because of the changes to the trickle message handler. Thanks, -Uplinger Hmmm, have no time for extensive testing atm, but here it looks like WUs turn valid now only if all intermediate files are uploaded/trickled before the WU finishes. Have lots of WUs with trickles/uploads < 90% done online, then disconnecting and finishing offline and then turning invalid. Also, WUs starting and completing offline turned invalid as well. But if I pause an offline WU after having reached 90% and upload all intermediate files before resuming/completing, it will turn valid. Willl do more testing if time permits. Matthias |
