Ideas on having survey to find out which research project to pick next.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering what would the members think of WCG hosting a survey about which research projects WCG should focus on. Obviously the process is long and it would not be 100% guaranteed, but if for example most users want to focus on doing cancer research or looking for a project that focuses on Alzheimer or Autism, or more Clean Energy research then maybe that could influence the project selection to prioritize any application that they get.

That is just my idea so please let me know if that is not the most optimal way, but for example I have tried looking for BOINC projects that focus on the two areas above but I was not able to find any.

I am not sure how may applications WCG does get, however maybe this could be a good way to also keep members interested as well.

Please let me know your thoughts on the matter.

Thank you

vlado101, you honestly think there's places where WCG can shop for projects?

I know of one important project that was to come, but given some by-product of other researches, it may have been pulled or delayed to adapt to the newly gained research findings. As CA's are not kept abreast [in outline], since longer, honestly I'm as clueless what's up as any other member. So much so, I could not possibly start building the next performance chart until the go-live has happened... well, a new project beta is rolling [and those come as a surprise to you as to me too].

Vlado101, WCG doesn't get to pick the projects where it wants to participate. Scientists, universities, organizations, etc come to WCG to request help for their projects. As far as I know, WCG doesn't have much of a say as to the type of the next projects that are around the corner.

Hi Sekebob/cjslman,

I guess I over estimated the amount of projects that WCG gets. I joined after the large number of projects WCG comleted (right around beginning of MCM project) so I thought there was a big backlog.

On average do you know how many projects requests does WCG gets? I know that there are technical things that they need to develop on IBM side to make sure that it works.

No, I think Vlado is RIGHT!

WCG should make a list of ALL participants who have sellected FA@h exclusevly (without option "If there is no work available for the project(s) I have selected above, please send me work from another project." and/or "Please opt me in to new projects as they become available.") & contact them on their MAIL...a survey would be also nice, asking them more about equipment or suggesting projects according to their equipment (which WCG has in a numbers of Averages).

So WCG could keep those people INTERESTED in other projects & keep their computational power on WCG! Think of it as a service, even though there is no money exchanged.

The reminded to people that have only select FA@h would be a really good idea. I personally am set to opt in for all the projects (any contribution is helpful biggrin ). Forgive my ignorance, but does WCG actively seek out researcher/universities that are interested in using WCG? I do see alot of BOINC projects that are specific to one research project. I guess I am wondering what would be the benefit of for example MCM researches to work with WCG instead of creating their own BONIC project.

I have been contributing for a while (not as much as some of the veteran crunchers) but I only recently started to wonder about the topic in this thread.

The advantage to having the project on WCG is that you do not have to have all of the BOINC knowledge, hardware, and hosting facilities which WCG provides. You still have know your project and have to have the hardware to process the results which are returned to you, but this is a lot less expensive for the researchers than running their own project. The researchers can concentrate on their own areas of expertise, rather than becoming BOINC infrastructure experts.

Edit:spelling

My favorite for a WCG project when there are idle at WCG.

Re: Ideas on having survey to find out which research project to pick next.

Members do get mailed when a new project launches based on their communication preferences in settings [which under no condition but an individual emergency should be circumvented], NOT when beta starts as beta cycles can take months... Don't announce projects if there is no / not enough work, was the last much heard complaint. cool
