Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

From June 12th to now that's what 18 days and still the drop didn't fall into the digital beaker ....that shows 3 layers of 10 day dead lines.

If it is true that resend are cut by 35% it's 4 layers.....say it ran at 65,000 wu's a day in any case we will see it die down for 1 to 2 more weeks. There is no reason for that. I commend the efforts for getting projects started, but there is just no reason to let the last few wu's trickle in.

If we can decide to be part of beta then why not take the same steps for a project close?? If you don't agree to some set terms such as not setting hours for internet connections and running on maxed out workload buffers your kicked off that stage of the project. Everyone gets notice going in... those are the rules.... no one is excluded you exclude your self.

Any project should be able to close out as fast as it starts up. I really think any steps that don't enable such timely actions at both ends reflect to the lethargic nature of the WCG managers and it's staff........I hate to say that but it is how i feel.

How many times has anyone asked for a 100% accurate dash board to show if the grid is having problems......and has that ever been done??? What about registered computers to active computers.....divide any days total run time by registered computers and it works out to just over 1 hour a day... It doesn't show a honest effort but was one of the first things I noticed and didn't agree with as a means to present the efforts of current crunchers.... just saying.

In my views there is much that can be done, much is talked about, and as far as I have seen nothing changes. Don't let it seem that I'm so disgruntle I'll jump ship, I don't step down like that....I step up and make honest points.

Any project should be able to close out as fast as it starts up.

Why? This project has been running for almost ten years. It is inevitable that the final WU will eventually be returned. Why not enjoy watching it play out? One thing crunching should have taught us all is patience.

Either that, or WCG should think about finishing project with something like Deep Blue or Watson...they can get the job done within a day time & the project will finish!

Of course, if executives of IBM should agree on that...'cause this resending & evaluating WUs is taking too long...it's almost a month after FA@h should have send all WUs out - still no end of the project! :/

Two very different views. The first tells us there is no rush to complete the science. The second wants to push it off to just two computers and just get it done and over with.

Why not just set a end date to run all remaining work units in a beta fashion to anyone that wants to be server connected 24/7 and has the buffer time to do so??

It's not hard it's just programming, all we would need is a bit of effort from the WCG managers to make sure it gets set up so the project heads don't need to sit and wait, and wait because someone has a 10 day limit and drops the program at day 9.75 ??

Why cant we get a button between "FORUMS" and "HELP" on the task page that says "DASH BOARD" that displays each running project in a internet speed test fashion so at a glance we can see if any are up or down on a watch dog page?? So no one has to sit and wait for a news flash because someone went to work and then found a problem, after he or she spent time reloading the program because there was no other news available. Still I'm sure there were a 100 or more that did this beating their heads on the wall last time work units stopped sending, trying to fix a problem that they didn't own

It's all just programming, and it seems no one wants to make the effort........or just doesn't know how to think out of the box....and there is so much room for change. Maybe they just don't know how to make it better.....or don't care.

I think it's something we need to keep on talking about. Without diving off to one end or the other. I just don't understand why there is no leadership with a ear and a direction behind all of this. I no longer wonder why this nation (the US) is falling apart we want all the credit and none of the work behind earning it. To me this is just a small representation of of the chloroformed brains behind the big wheels that stopped turning after the last moon launch.

This is a little off topic but here goes. You have made valid points about what items you would like to see implemented. Unfortunately, there are things called budget restraints, staff restraints and time restraints, all related. How WCG allocates its limited funds (all from IBM) may not be how some would desire it, but to give credit where credit is due, they have designed and run a quite reliable project. Relax and let FAAH finish in its own good time. Like Sekerob says, the scientists have mountains of data to do further processing on so be patient.
Cheers

Re: FightAIDS@Home Estimated Completion Date ( June 4, 2015 ) ESTIMATE!!!

I was going to type "Waiting another week won't kill anyone" but then I thought about that statement...and i'm not sure if it's tue or not.

the last WUs are probably useless anyway, like 99.99% of the others. It is a brute-force approach afterall.

on the other hand, what if these last WUs are problematic and are just spinning in digital hell, and have been doing so for years? Some manual help might be needed.

Robokapp, eventually some stragglers get a multi-copy boost. Right now, think it's the Android platform running behind [my guess]. There's a high fail rate, i.e. few devices will be deemed 'reliable', so there will be some platform related queuing.

Techs have other things to do than micromanaging ... they could be heads down coding the next project that is targeting to erase famine for a few billion. They'll do the MMing when the system says nothing is in progress anymore and the 'take out' inventory has been collated and can be sent to the scientists. They've got their own [homogeneous] testing cluster for the very resistant to rerun, if they want to.

If there is a rush with results of one or the other experiment for -The Project Owners -, then they have indicated that in past, and so particular batches have been pushed through. Neither have said anything.

Thanks stg.joe to put the right words on my thoughts.
I fully support your point of view.

Well, of course an approach with "less time to completion of WU" is VALID in the END...as BETA r run also...& that is NOT MUCH PROGRAMMING...few button & execute it on higher PRIORITY scale...

but we see that, in the BIGGEST project we had on WCG - a FA@h - it's not enough...so some SERVER time should be sufficient to finish the project ON TIME!

why on time?
There are people who r sick RIGHT NOW! actually MANY of them are sick!
(not me, I'm HIVneg so far...just been tested!)
So FOR THEM, a completion of the project would be DONE on time! we have over a month of reseeds...& we'r on the bring of 99,99% of the project DONE! Scientist await our DATA...to HELP human kind & sick people...can we WAIT? can we REALLY WAIT for the WUs to be DONE?

Every humanitarian bone in me says NO...so I stick with that - NO I CAN'T JUST SIT & WAIT!
& that is the reason I'm writing u this POST...I can't prolong this science 1 more day...'cause of this statistics:
35 mil.lives living with AIDS - https://www.aids.gov/federal-resources/around-the-world/global-aids-overview/
2011, 1.7mil lives DIED - http://www.avert.org/worldwide-hiv-aids-statistics.htm
2013, 1.5mil lives DIED - http://www.who.int/gho/hiv/epidemic_status/deaths_text/en/

so that is more than 4000 lives EVERY DAY! & for anyone saying that WE can WAIT...what if u r 1 of those 4000 lives? what if...?

so I write...& I act...so bring BETTER tomorrow to all humanity!
cool

KLiK, the scientists aren't exactly waiting on this data. They are probably still working on 2012 (I would check with the latest update but the FAAH website isn't working) data right now.

They will only get to the results which we are currently waiting be crunched in several years.
