It's actually now the umpteen-ed report, in this and other threads, the first report acknowledged by techs as a point of investigation. No ETA. Crowd crunch on. As Sekerob has mentioned, it is on my radar. I have not had a chance to look into it just yet, but I hope to get to it soon. Something changed and I need to see what triggered it. Thank you for your patience, -Uplinger As said, it is on my radar and I've had a chance to take a look. The SQL that was used to pull those stats made the assumption that the rows in the database came at a certain time. This is not the case since we migrated database servers for the first time in 6 years. So, it will require a website rebuild to fix it. I'm not sure when that'll be right now but hopefully soon so I can fix the glitch :) Note: With a website build takes testing and time. Thanks, -Uplinger |

Just had a thought (no, it's not a sign of the apocolypse.....yet). What if News posts in the future for upgrades/maintenance included something like what you see in things like release notes/change logs and such? It would all be Greek to 99 percent of us but would be something we could see and be able to realize, to some degree, the magnitude of what has to go on "behind the curtain" to keep things humming. It only makes sense that changes have to be made to keep things up with all the latest security updates, updates to BOINC and other back end software/hardware, and the like. Just the sheer volume of data WCG has to maintain has to be beyond anything the DB software devs ever thought possible. Keithhenry, Unfortunately there are some security reasons that we do not divulge much information behind the scenes on our servers. For example, if I said we were upgrading from Ubuntu 08.04 to 08.10, then known security issues could be targetted. We do not use Ubuntu on our backend and our server software is up to date. But you can see how saying we're patching something of a known security bug, gives availability for someone to exploit it. Most of the upgrades for security purposes do not require reboot, so those go unnoticed. I do agree it would be interesting to know more and I try to give as much information as I'm allowed. I will try to make the System Outage messages have more information in the future. Thanks, -Uplinger As the wise man has said - DOH! Yea, I can understand not wanting to make anything easier for the hackers. Then again, the descriptions MS uses for its security patches are about as generic and unenlightening as you can get. There could be value in saying you're making security updates and pretty much leaving it at that. Knowing that you're moving a DB to a larger server could help us realize the complications of hoarding so much data. I mean, I can pull data on crunching I did 9-10 years ago, not to mention forum posts. Awareness of that may help us see the value/practicality of archiving some of the data into separate DBs we can still get to but rarely access. I did notice the red System Outage message was a bit un-generic for a while back on Saturday. That could be a VERY effective way of letting folks know what the status is without us having to try checking FB or Twit (not that that is a big effort). More of a "we're down and here's where we are on getting done and back up" all at the same time. Might even be easier on you to update that than having to mess with FB and Twit until you're done with the change. |

keithhenry,
As for how much information we give out on updates, I will give as much as I'm allowed to :) Using the maintenance page is one thing we have discussed (Monday after the fact) on outages like this in the future. Normally, we would only have an outage for minutes which would not require us to modify the maintenance page. I'm hoping we don't need to utilize this page much in the future. Thanks, -Uplinger |

Well, pretty much. It's by active/intermittent/inactive. Each of the three sections appears to be alphabetical, not by start date but that may not really have existed. It could be that new active projects got added to the top of the list giving us active by start date. I was starting to get used to and adapted to the runtime sort so this is fine for me.

Well, others with eidetic memory may tell if this top section order looks totally right, quite right, somewhat right, give or take right, or WhIPped:
FightAIDS@Home Mapping Cancer Markers Outsmart Ebola Together The Clean Energy Project - Phase 2 Uncovering Genome Mysteries Beta Testing Maybe now it's based on the latest application version ![]() |

The query was changed to sort based on Active projects. Then alphabetical. Previously there was no technical sort on it.
Thanks, -Uplinger |

Thanks, -Uplinger If memory serves me right knreed explained the 3 groups active intermittent complete were sorted descending from newest to oldest launch date. This is what you get if visiting the project list on the global page www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProjects.do |

I'll see about having it go back to release date within project status (Active, intermittent, completed).
Thanks, -Uplinger |
