Hello,
I've been a long time member of WCG but a few days ago I terminated my wired Internet and started using my phone's mobile data as hotspot for my PC which runs BOINC. Because of this new development I need to limit my data usage so I can only connect my PC via the hotspot every two days on average. The problem is that unless I manually suspend Internet for BOINC it would keep trying to upload the finished WUs. I'm worried that if it "fails" to upload too many times the WUs would be aborted. I currently have around 50 WUs in reserve every time I connect. Would it be possible to instruct BOINC to suspend communication when there is no Internet connection available? I don't terribly mind suspending it manually every time but it would be great if the process can be streamlined. Thanks. |

aptx.4869,
----------------------------------------I have done this also, using my phone as a wifi hotspot to download and upload workunits. Don't worry, a workunit will not "fail" by trying to upload too many times. The time between retries will increase to several hours however. You will need to go to the Transfers tab, highlight the workunits, and then click on "Retry Now" to get them started. Good luck. |

The upload time out is like 14 days.
This scenario where you use a mobile device as hotspot for a static device suggests to the developers need adding the 'transfer tasks on wifi only' option also to the pc version of the agent. More so, since wifi is a long standing weakness for the linux platform, maybe that option could mitigate the task crashing that is being experienced whenever wifi is down. @wcg technicians: Please pass this suggestion to the berkeley developers. It's a trend to do away with the fixed line. In developing countries mobile communication is in fact the only way to rapidly put a network in place. |

I see. Thank you very much for your responses. I suppose I'll just double the cached WUs to compensate the delay.
