Latest hardware & task run-time

I am wanting to build a new computer. I am wanting to go with the Haswell E 5960X 8 core or 5930K 6 core. I am interested to get an idea of how long the task takes to run on for example Haswell and Haswell E.

I am interested to know can UGM tasks be completed in sub 3 hours, how do MCM tasks take in general also do CEP 2 tasks still reach the 18 hour hard cut off point?

I am aware that all tasks very in time

Thanks for your feedback

Speedy51,

Since no one has replied to your question yet, I will give it a shot even though I don't have any experience with the two processors you are proposing.

There seem to be at least two different sizes of UGM1 workunits. The UGM1 workunits are grouped by batch number, with the batch number being the five digit number in the workunit name. Most batches will complete in around 3.3 hours on my i7-2770s, but occasionaly there is a batch where the workunits take around 5.2 hours. You may be able to extrapolate from that the time it will take on your proposed CPUs. Perhaps others can share their experiences with this project.

During the Beta for the UGM1 project, 33.82 percent of all workunits completed in less than 3.00 hours. Read this: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,37273_offset,0#471143

Concerning the CEP2 project deadline, yes they still cut off at 18 hours.

Good luck with your new computer.

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

Thanks Deltavee for your response. Interesting your longest run-time is a shade shorter than an hour on my longest run-time and my current system. My longest run-time is about 6.24 hours from batch ugm1_ ugm1_01712_0154 completed on 11/10/14 at 4:27:08 I currently using a first gen I7 980X stock 3.33 GHZ overclocked to 3.57 GHZ

Overclocking is not the way with the crunching data...as all computations are CPU intensive, on an overclocked CPU's there are more errors...so yes, you crunch the data - get error on it - get 0 points...

There are old topics with OC of CPU's...and all of us noticed that it's just isn't worth it!

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

OCing is best left to those that know what they're doing, experts not exactly daily residents of these forums. Key it seems is ensuring all component speeds, ram and cpu particularly are in sync and enough cooling is in place for there not to be any overheated bit transporters making any quantum jumps across leads, causing invalid or error results. (sort of wink)

Yes, there seem to be runtime ranges for ugm, it being entirely unpredictable, and so the time to completion showing in the agent at start unreliable at best.

Haswell i5 4670 finishes the current UGM tasks in 2.74 hours on average @3.40 Ghz stock speed.
Best advice on oc-ing for boinc I can offer is: don't change the memory voltage settings. And test before you crunch. Prime95 is a good benchmark.

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

Thank you all for your comments & comments in regards to overclocking. I have had very few tasks fail. I am aware overclocking is very much trial and error with this project.

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

I am going to be ordering my new system by 1 December/30 November US. I would like thoughts on whether you would go with 6 core 5930 K or would you pay just over $800NZ dollar more and go with the 8 core 5960 X apparently these are only 18% performance increase. Is there a major difference in CPU processing time between these 2 CPUs? I worked out that if you return one day worth of computing time an 18% increase on that is 4.32 hours. This is a reasonable increase in my eyes

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

With hyperthreading switched on, the 5930K can run 12 threads simultaneously but the 5960X can run 16. That's an increase of 33,3%. Good for badge-hunting biggrin

Re: Latest hardware & task run-time

I couldn't agree with you more about the badge hunting. To achieve the same speed as 5960 am I correct in saying that you would have to over clock the 5930 K by a total of 1 GHz? I am aware about the issue with overclocking in terms of stability.
