How many of those complaining about the lack of GPU workunits are taking classes in CUDA or OpenCL so they can try converting some of the current applications to run on GPUs? I'm taking such a class now. Hey, take it easy. Some projects we had in a past really could've been accelerated by GPUs if proper software was used. E.g. many projects are molecular dynamics/molecular modeling - in that particular area there are plenty GPU-based solvers and some of them are free (like GROMACS - gnu gpl). But research teams picks software they're more familiar instead of learning new, faster one. So in short term - they're able to create project faster but then it takes way longer to get results from it. For GPU solvers development stage takes longer but project is finished way faster. Of course not every project can be optimized for GPU usage but it's just waste of valuable resources when they limit themselves to CPU only. |

Who's being lazy here and not getting me work to run on my GPU? Lazy? Oh Boo hoo. No work for your GPUs. Are you really that clueless? I bought the equipment, I pay for the electricity, all you have to do is send me work units. Since I bought the Radeon R9 280X for$320, a $50 more expensive option than the Nvidia option which is intentionally garbage for compute. I'm sitting on $60 worth of depreciation here, No one gives a rats rear end about your "depreciation". and AMD just launched a card with similar performance that uses 60 watts less power. I mean, I'm one of your top 5000 people here! For that you get 1 attaboy. Come back when you reach the top 100. Why are you sitting on you rears? Why don't you quit complaining and do some research. (Here's a hint. Neither the techs at WCG nor IBM has anything to do with what platform the researchers who supply the work decide to use. Go complain to them.)

Come on, give it a break :-D Why so agressive? :-P Any fool who comes on here and disrespects the techs and all the hard work they do needs to be B slapped. If you can't bother to do even a little bit of research before making a post like that then you should expect to get called out.

Can you share info about where you're taking the GPU classes? Are any good ones available online? We'd be interested. Look at the Coursera web site. They have a free online course with Heterogeneous in the title about once a year, mostly for CUDA, but with about half a week on OpenCL, and with a little on a few other GPU programming languages that BOINC currently does not support. Also, Altera is currently offering a free online course in OpenCL. I haven't started that class yet, but it it looks likely to be aimed mostly at using OpenCL with their FPGAs. Coursera
https://www.coursera.org/courses Heterogeneous Parallel Computing is likely to start in January and last for a few months. Altera courses <http://app.design.altera.com/e/es?s=168016771...14febbd8744697d8e6e1a> Five videos. If you're interested in on-site courses (not free), look at Doulos. I haven't tried their courses. http://www.doulos.com/content/training/course_schedule.php |

If you want to get GPU workunits before WCG offers any more, see:
GPUGRID https://www.gpugrid.net/ Requires fairly high-end Nvidia-based graphics cards. POEM@HOME http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/ Good for most Nvidia-based or AMD-based graphics cards. Currently testing the ability to use Intel GPUs. Both are working on protein research relevant to medical research. |

The first of the five Altera videos on OpenCL covered mainly general topics, especially using OpenCL on Altera products such as their FPGAs. They don't make it easy to find the other four. They expect their server to be down part of this weekend.
I found my notes from trying to take an online Altera OpenCL class in 2014. Only part of the required software would install properly on my computers, so I didn't get very far in that class. There's a new software package this time, but its manual fails to mention whether it is supported under Windows 10. Online OpenCL classes are rather hard to find, even if you're willing to pay for them, so this may still be the best online OpenCL class available this year. |

Robertmiles, you make an excellent point about using GPUGRID and Poem for the GPU work! I haven't used GPUGRID but, from my personal experience with Poem I can confidently say that it has been very reliable and plays well with other projects.
