----------------------------------------http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/20...ctor-and-strengthening-fo " IBM. IBM is announcing an expansion of its philanthropic World Community Grid program, which enables members of the public to donate their computer or mobile device's unused computing power to scientists. The expansion will provide scientists studying climate change topics including staple food crops and water management with free access to dedicated virtual supercomputing resources and a platform to engage the public on their research. Each researcher will have access to up to 100,000 years of computing time, a value of $60m in today's costs. IBM is inviting researchers to submit project proposals and members of the public to donate their unused computing power to these efforts at worldcommunitygrid.org. " What does this expansion mean exactly? This is certainly a welcome announcement, but if neither IBM nor WCG does nothing to get the word out about these new projects, I don't see much changing. If they don't increase staff at WCG, I don't see much changing. If they don't give us a decent forum, I don't see new people who join viewing this as much of a community and participating very much - which is really what we need if we expect to hold on to any gains this might bring.
----------------------------------------So while this is great news, the devil is in the details and those are yet to be revealed. |

"At IBM, we hope that the equivalent of 100,000 years of computing time per scientist will speed the next major breakthrough to help the world meet the challenge of climate change."
----------------------------------------"Each approved project will have access to up to 100,000 years of computing time at a value of $60 million." Why does this sound like they are capping the amount of time each person gets? Shouldn't the grid be used to crunch for as long as required for the project? |

This certainly a welcome announcement but as twilyth notes the devil is in the details and those are yet to be revealed.
----------------------------------------This would be an ideal opportunity for Jen Crozier - Vice President, IBM Global Citizenship Initiatives to front a Live Webcast with the WCG community to explain her vision and what today's announcement wil mean in practice. |

Maybe jhindo or ErikaT can tell us a bit more!

Congratulations to IBM for supporting the Climate Data Initiative. I look forward to the new projects and many more years of crunching. Great job, guys.

Already a climate project at climate prediction. They just expanded too. Been crunching over there almost as long as WCG. Since they are already set up for climate, why not expand it more over there instead of creating another one. Don't get me wrong about WCG doing something. Always can use another badge. But why duplicate.

According to BOINCstats, Climate Prediction only has about 15k active users whereas I think WCG has something over 70k last I checked. So that might be one reason for adding WCG. We're probably better able to absorb a significant influx than CP.

Their limit is not what wcg can offer, its their wanting infrastructure, no money to accelerate the research, but then, studying the output is another issue, meaning, speeding up is not going to add. Miles Allen is busy enough as he is.
