240 days would be if they ran without competition on wcg. Since project shares are aimed to be about equal over time with 3 projects running at any time 240 becomes 720 i.e. 2 years. Think to have read the lower level to get on the grid is like 6 months on the calendar, so even alone they'd qualify.

anyway...back to topic: science should be implemnted in Global scale...I for one will not participate in a project directed for USA only...like I didn't participate in project for Africa, even though it's far more dearer continent to me than America... What's in a name ![]() You participated in Computing for Sustainable Water which was specifically looking at the Chesapeake Bay Watershed in the United States ![]() Science has a way of transcending national boundaries whatever a project may be called. AfricanClimate@Home may have had it's origins in Africa but the research and results have worldwide implications. Following your logic few people would particpate in a project called El Nino@home (if there were one) despite it's effect on weather worlwide. |

Just saying...if the scientist market this project for the whole world, all of us will participate...
----------------------------------------If this is only US thing...sorry! Eu is a partner... and don't get me started in Kyoto protocol (link )...so why would I help the ones, that wouldn't come to the table? is whole world an idiot, only the have climate problems? ![]() |

KLiK wrote: that is something like almost 240days of calcs... isn't that TOO SMALL? (don't stress about it guys, from US...just that most of us in EU will participate in projects that will benefit for EU...why would we crunch data for US?) See the post from jhindo http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ad,37034_offset,10#464994 ![]() I would definitely participate in any project which might be beneficial also for the rest of the world even if it will be related to a certain USA territory (or any other territory on the world). If it will be a meaningless one like CFSW (meaningless from my own perspective, of course), I will stop shrubbing it at the Bronze badge. Cheers ![]() ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Some people won't participate in the Aids project, and some will only crunch cancer projects. That's one of the great things about Boinc and the WCG, you only have to crunch the projects that you want to.

This certainly a welcome announcement but as twilyth notes the devil is in the details and those are yet to be revealed. This would be an ideal opportunity for Jen Crozier - Vice President, IBM Global Citizenship Initiatives to front a Live Webcast with the WCG community to explain her vision and what today's announcement wil mean in practice. I tweeted the above and got a response: @WCGrid Will Jen Crozier front a Webcast with WCG volunteers to further explain todays announcement? Don't take our support for granted. - 29 Jul World Community Grid @WCGrid @jonniebuk Jen won't be doing a webcast-but we sincerely appreciate & value your support. Please see this forum post: ow.ly/zPzQ4 So I got a response even if it was negative. jhindo's post above and a seond post here are just platitudes and add nothing to oir knowledge base. As she says: there's more than can be done and no shortage of ideas of how to better serve our wonderful volunteer community - our top priority continues to be supporting the research, so we constantly have to balance our time and resources against that. We've been told previously that the WCG team is "relatively small" so how is a potentially large and new field of research to be supported, let alone any further development of community services? |

That's one of the great things about Boinc and the WCG, you only have to crunch the projects that you want to. OF COURSE! that is the idea in participating in projects...doing some good work, for the stuff that matters to you! but this is conversation right now...and so we DEBATE here... don't get me wrong, I like the US...had stayed there for a while, but returned to EU... but US has deliberately walked out of the Kyoto protocol...now they ask people & corporations to step in...which is good! it's even greater that WCG as a branch of IBM has stepped in... now it's up to scientist to develop the research...if it will be for all human kind, I will participate in it...if it will be for partners (US with NATO & EU), great I will participate in it... but if it is only how to use world wide grid to clean up our domestic problems...sorry guys, "You reap what you sow!" we asked you politely to put signature to Kyoto - no, you wouldn't 'cause of the economics...every action, has it's reaction! so does the research...if the project is for a whole Earth & human kind - I will do it...if not, I'll abandon it like computing for CfSW... take care! |

The only thing the usa has to achieve is drop the energy consumption from fossil fuels to the same average as the rest of the world consumes. Even matching europe would have a massive impact on greenhouse gas output. As it is 4.5 percent of the world population burning about 25 percent, to talk about the enormous guzzling that takes place in north america, to include canada. Yes the chinese match the usa since a few years, but they are 1.4 billion people by comparison to the 350m of north america.

And since we need to raise the hyway tax to pay for our crumbling infrastructure and to compensate for increases in inflation since 1997, we could kill 2 birds with one stone. Instead we're doing some byzantine corporate tax shell game that will only serve to kick the can down the road. Score another "win" for our do-nothing Congress.
