The Press Release proclaims Each approved project will have access to up to 100,000 years of computing time
----------------------------------------Not sure where that figure comes from We're currently averaging 419 years CPU time per day with around 72% of that contributed daily by just 5,000 members! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Jul 30, 2014 3:41:52 PM] |

The airbrush with which fata morganas are created.
Picture a cpu based project could be ported to gpu and suddenly 100k becomes 5k years, done in a fortnight. Now we know the upcoming umg1 uses sse2 to make it 20 times faster than without and the project is still being boarded. Big data, and that is what these projects are struggling the most with, almost without exception. Math what clean energy must have been costing without our 28k / 100k * 60m = 16.8 million usd worth of free computations, jabbas and all. If 72% comes off the top 5000 contributors, it means these have forked 12 million over to harvard, funs with sums. Not even a token certificate is provided here, which about 100% of the other boinc projects provide from the print-it-yourself shop. Oops, sorry that slipped out of the virtual keyboard. Another mirage we've been picturing. |

Already a climate project at climate prediction. They just expanded too. Been crunching over there almost as long as WCG. Since they are already set up for climate, why not expand it more over there instead of creating another one. Don't get me wrong about WCG doing something. Always can use another badge. But why duplicate. Considering how small their admin list is and how much trouble they have generating and maintaining their work as well as the inability to get their site to run smooth (not to mention the problems with stats exporting) I would say CPDN isn't as attractive as a well designed and maintained project like WCG. You say why duplicate? The sciences being brought may be completely different or just different in approach. Why would WCG have hosted GFAM or HPFP2? We already have protein folding projects and Malaria projects. The answer is quite simple and that is because we need many approaches to solving our problems. Since CPDN has quite frankly proven that they just don't have the resources to deliver as many volunteers would expect, I would not use them as a selling point. I would rather hype a project known for their ability to produce good experiences. WCG does well with that compared to many projects. |

Who cares where its located. Climate is a global issue, not just the USA. "Empowering America’s Agricultural Sector and Strengthening Food Resilience through the President’s Climate Data Initiative""The President’s Climate Data Initiative: Empowering America’s Communities to Prepare for the Effects of Climate Change" If there are any grant funds put into this initiative, they will likely need to stay within the US, unless there is no domestic source for the goods or services needed... And since WCG has stepped up, that pretty much seals the deal. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by noderaser at Jul 31, 2014 1:50:16 AM] |

Thanks everyone for your comments.
We're always looking for ways to promote World Community Grid's capabilities to the scientific community. Historically, World Community Grid used to support mostly medical research. In recent years, we've branched out to include environmental and sustainability-related research. This week's announcement isn't about moving away from medical research towards sustainable research but about reaching out to potential researchers to articulate our track record and the breadth of research this community and platform are capable of supporting. Also, for as long as as our research partners continue to need computing power for their work, we continue running their projects on World Community Grid. The 100k years of runtime was more of a way to articulate World Community Grid's powerful capacity as researchers sometimes underestimate the scale of computing power they can have access to. |

that is something like almost 240days of calcs... isn't that TOO SMALL? Possibly, but only 3 WCG projects have ever crossed that 100k line: (link). |

Possibly, but only 3 WCG projects have ever crossed that 100k line: (link). maybe WCG plans to "charge" projects over 100ky? anyway...back to topic: science should be implemnted in Global scale...I for one will not participate in a project directed for USA only...like I didn't participate in project for Africa, even though it's far more dearer continent to me than America... (don't stress about it guys, from US...just that most of us in EU will participate in projects that will benefit for EU...why would we crunch data for US?) |
