Version 12.04 is the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version of Ubuntu.
If you are looking to install a new OS, I would wait for 14.04 to be released in a few days. If you can wait a few days you don't need to worry about upgrade from 12.04 or 13.10 to 14.04. Just my opinion of course. Also, I think the new images you download from their site are going to require a DVD to be burned to. I Know the latest 12.04.4 from their site is over the 700MB limit for a cd-r. Also, another way to get your version is to pull up a terminal and type in 'cat /etc/lsb-release' Example output: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS" Thanks, -Uplinger |

Thanks uplinger.
Yes, I will wait for 14.04 I was not able to get Linux to the computer. Since I can't burn DVDs I tried to use a USB stick, but the computer keeps saying boot error. I don't know why. I also tried formatting the USB stick first, but maybe that made it worse. I need to know how to make the USB stick work. |

Dieter,
I think you were going down the right path, but just in case jr1 was creating the Ubuntu boot USB from a windows device, here are the instructions for that. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows They also have instructions for Mac as well. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx Thanks, -Uplinger |

How do I format the stick? There are so many options, and extension types, and first I formatted the volume. The second time I formatted the stick without a volume. |

uplinger, no I was trying to make the USB stick on my Ubuntu computer. Then I was trying to make it boot on a Dell computer that has Windows Vista.

@jr1
----------------------------------------Do you have ensured that BIOS configuration of this Vista computer allows booting from USB sticks? ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

It has an option to boot from a removable drive, and I selected that.
----------------------------------------The USB stick lights up and starts blinking, but the computer stops and says Boot Error. When I first bought the USB sticks a long time ago, I used them on WinXP, so I tried to format them and erase them in my now Ubuntu computer. Maybe I messed them up trying to format them without knowing about Volumes, partitions, extensions, etc. When I right-click the USB stick and select Properties, down at the bottom it says filesystem type: msdos Is it supposed to say that after I formatted the USB drive with my Ubuntu Linux? Ok I have an update.
I just tested the USB stick on my Linux computer, and it does work, it Will boot Linux. It must be something wrong with the Dell computer that has Windows Vista. |
