Bearcat,
----------------------------------------The 12-core Magny-cours (6100) cpu's bought used could save a lot of money over going with the newer Abu Dhabi (6300) CPU's for an AMD system. After having done lots of comparisons/research, buying the newer AMD CPU's at retail prices is not very economical and in some cases the older CPU's even outperform the newer ones on a core for core/clock for clock basis. You could build a quad socket system with these older used (but good) cpu's for around $2000 and get very respectable and comparable performance. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ryan222h at Jan 6, 2014 2:25:15 AM] |

Been looking on ebay at the 6100's. For what they want, could build 4 4930k system if i skimp on parts. Be a little more in cost but ppd would smoke the 6100's. Still just considering. Want to see if haswell 8 cores come out early. Just hope the cost isn't astronomical. Thanks for the tip.
----------------------------------------Always said I would reevaluate if I want to keep crunching when I hit my 100 years crunching goal. Just went over 99 years.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!

Been looking on ebay at the 6100's. For what they want, could build 4 4930k system if i skimp on parts. Not sure where you're looking, possibly at brand new cpu's? I found a few used opteron 6172's and 6174's all for under $150 bucks. So you could buy 4 of these CPU's for the price of one i7-4930k almost, and they will do at least the same work as 2 i7-4930k systems. I would prefer the Intel systems due to lower power consumption/newer architectures, but the way that they rake you over the coals with pricing is just rediculous in my opinion. I do own several i7 systems as well though, of the quad core variety. To be fair, AMD server CPU's bought brand new are not cheap either. Hope you stick with crunching after reaching your goal, Bearcat. It is a larger investment than most people realize considering the time spent and money spent. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by ryan222h at Jan 6, 2014 4:25:27 PM] |

Here is and idea I have been toying around with for my next build in a quad setup.... Bearcat, buying new is very costly, I'm looking at used, they come in at a much better price...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113320 Next build details coming soon.

While you are all discussing the merrits of various processors etc, I've been looking at my next build!
----------------------------------------I picked up four of these to be the 'brains' as it were. This system is going to be a real beast, it may not be the fastest at 2.2Ghz, but it will have 2 big pluses - 1, it will run 64 threads! 2, it will use less power than 4 of my current 8 core machines and do twice the work! Stay tuned for more details of the build config... Edit - added this Also, with so many cores the PPWatt should be high, so better crunching value for the cost of the electric. I'm looking at a program of upgrading/replacing my machines with big multi-socket systems to redues the power useage and increase the output.

@twilyth - if the last build was the 'Death Star' what would you call this one?
