Re: Death Star Build Log (name explained below)

It would be interesting to see how these numbers compare to other crunching machines...

I checked 2 AMD G34 systems. For points I used the last 7 day average to figure a per day amount. Systems are both running Linux. Here are the results.

Workstation 1: ~60,000 ppd 325 watts (multiplied by 24 for watt/hours) = 7.69 ppw/h (points per watt/hour)

Workstation 2: ~150,000 ppd 620 watts (multiplied by 24 for watt/hours) = 10.0 ppw/h (points per watt/hour)

Workstation 1 is currently having some sort of issue as it doesn't seem to be doing as much work as it's capable of. I've been working on finding out the cause.

Here is a video showing these two system up close and personal. Happy new year! - Ryan

Ryan222,
Those are some sweet machines. I know why you keep the Big Kahuna in the garage. I run a couple of Dell rack mount servers, so I know how much noise they can make. My two are out in the shed, where it is currently about -15F (Old Man Winter cooling). laughing
Cheers

They are some nice machines Ryan!

Thanks for the comparison, workstation 1 compares to my 24 core machine for ppw, I'm just adding some more machines, however, I'm going to look closer at the output/power consumption before adding too many...

All - other comparisons would be useful and appreciated...

Cool video. My dual X5670's @2.93 are doing around 77000 ppd. My i4930k @3.9 is doing around 60000. Waiting on intel to release the 8 core haswell around summer time.

Thanks Bearcat, however, it would be useful to have some power useage figures if you have them. Producing 77k ppd is brilliant, but how much power does your system use to do it?

Re: Death Star Build Log (name explained below)

I remember Bearcat posting power consumption figures for that machine before somewhere...can't remember the number.

The 4930k system is probably the most efficient though, probably only using about 200 watts for the entire system.

Generally speaking, the most efficient systems are going to be the ones that have the most non-overclocked cores and have the least amount of extra devices (graphics cards/hard disks/etc.)

Re: Death Star Build Log (name explained below)

Thanks Rayn, I'll have a search for it.

Inspired by your Big Kahuna system, I'm planning my next addition! I'll post more info as things develop, but it's going to be BIG!

Re: Death Star Build Log (name explained below)

Just looked at my UPS's, the dually is at 260 out with no GPU installed and the hex is at 175 out. The hex is OC to 3.9Ghz and has a 7950 GPU in it. Monitors were off though when I looked. Also, the dually has 4 hard drives and an ssd whereas the hex has 1 ssd and 1 hard drive.

Re: Death Star Build Log (name explained below)

Thanks Bearcat, those numbers work out to the following, if I've got it right:

=sum((77000/24)/260) = 12.34 ppw/h
=sum((60000/24)/175) = 14.29 ppw/h

In a word, impressive! I can't help wondering how high it would go if you disconnected all the non-essential components to reduce power to the minimum…
