Rob, I have just been to the 'standard' Boinc forums and had a little look around......yes it does have PMs......yes it does have Avatars.....Yes it does have a nice method of identifying new post in threads etc........
I am swinging around to your way and maybe, maybe, it would make a viable alternative......if, and a BIG IF, the badges can be sorted out.....perhaps we could start piling the pressure on for more integration into the wider Boinc Community? |

Sekerob: ... [but I could use a thumbs up / down smiley as main additions ;P]

I'm less interested with thumbs up and thumbs down (though they can be fun). But the main reason I don't participate in these forums except for emergency situations is that there is no good way for me to check unread messages. That's how I navigate all the other forums I subscribe to (many of which have fewer techie resources than this one).

EveB: With the growth in membership, maybe the people who are responsible for allocating resources to WCG will see the light and provide us with a REAL forum that is capable of doing such things but if they're as stubbornly defiant in their refusal to upgrade as they have been traditionally, I wouldn't hold my breath.
----------------------------------------I'm sure know about the "watch thread" feature of the forum but that is a horribly feeble imitation of what you really want. Most forums give you the ability to see in real time what threads you have participated in have new posts. The best you can get here is an email notification when you select that option for a watched thread. A "feature" which doesn't seem to be working currently. At least I haven't seen any new notifications in weeks. Instead you have to try to remember which threads you've posted to. You don't even get a marker or tag next to threads in which you have posts when you look at the 'recent threads' list. That is truly pathetic. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jan 12, 2014 4:36:39 PM] |

What no one has been able to confirm or deny is with the more 'useable' forums, would we lose the badges?

Most commercial software like vBulletin is incredibly flexible so I really wouldn't worry about that. It would be pretty easy to convert the badges to a single .jpg file and use that as your avatar, if you so chose.
----------------------------------------Obviously if one can create the kind of signature graphics like the type that SNURK and others have generously created, dynamically creating a .jpg or .gif file from your badges should be a piece of cake. Then all you would have to do is point to that file to use as your avatar. The forum software could conceivably require a small modification to use dynamically generated avatars, but I seriously doubt that would require any significant modifications. The sig graphics we now use don't require that since they just replace the file you now point to with a new one. So using such a file for your avatar shouldn't create any problem at all. The problem is that we have so few people visiting the forum that it's unlikely we can even get qualified people to post here on that or any other issue. ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by twilyth at Jan 12, 2014 5:12:42 PM] |

With the growth in membership, maybe the people who are responsible for allocating resources to WCG will see the light and provide us with a REAL forum that is capable of doing such things Kevin Reed said in the BOINC workshop video that there had been changes, within IBM, as to how WCG was supported and the IBM Executive directly sponsoring WCG had changed. This change gave rise to the first ever WCG User survey. We need to identify this un-named Executive who is the person who has the ultimate decision making power. Maybe said Executive would participate in a Q&A video conference covering non-Project issues? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Jan 12, 2014 5:51:57 PM] |

From this 2004 press release, it looks like Linda Sanford was the person in charge of WCG on the IBM side. So it should be simple to find out who replaced her.
----------------------------------------"World Community Grid represents a new model for philanthropic giving," said Linda Sanford, IBM senior vice president, Enterprise On Demand Transformation, and chairperson of World Community Grid's Advisory Board. "IBM is involved in World Community Grid because just as we do for clients, we're committed to bringing the best technologies forward to address critical societal and health issues. World Community Grid demonstrates that government, business, and society can be the direct beneficiary of innovation if we are willing to rethink the way innovation and science both develop and prosper." ![]() ![]() |

But as of July of last year, Stanley S. Litow seems to be the person in charge since WCG is listed under his name here .
