Why would you expect
...a firm commitment to abandon MVN and migrate to something that is actually supported...[ when you already knowthe forum isn't any sort of a priority around here Sounds like you asked and answered your own question. What a waste of a post.Beside, the 98-99% of WCG members who are not regular posters, are not going to waste their time telling WCG not to waste their time updating the forum software because they do not care if the forum software is updated. and some of the rest that do post, don't care either. That's a lot of not caring. A significant majority I believe. |

LOL. Do you go out of your way to make inane remarks like this or is it just an impulse you can't suppress? Inquiring minds want to know.

Inquiring minds want to know. ![]() twilith, if you want my advice, please don't "waste" your time with astrolabe. He is relentless on fighting back any and every initiative that people dare post on these forums. Let's focus on the big things instead: we have "won" a small battle by having someone from the techs look into the issue with the notification emails. Now we need to keep pushing with this thread to see if we manage to get some sort of horizon on if or when other changes will be made (hopefully for the better). Cheers! Knowledge is limited. Don't be seen harping a case ;o). There were 15,xxx surveys completed in March. Don't remember what it said on the forum experience/wants element... low interest it will have been as when the chief admin said 9 months later "there are no plans". While I 'live' on these, as I wrote, many an hour a week, it's no deal breaker for me [but I could use a thumbs up / down smiley as main additions ;P]

twilith, if you want my advice, please don't "waste" your time with astrolabe. Cheers! I've noticed that about astrolube. I wasn't sure if I'd done something to twerk him off personally or what the deal was. Well, at least I know there will always be someone here to bump my posts. The problem with the forum I think is myopia. I don't think anyone at WCG actually understands the importance of having a vibrant community for stimulating interest in the work we do. This is pretty boring stuff when you think about it. It truly is. To get people interested, talking to friends and family, to get them excited, you need a community and we simply don't have that. But what is the excuse for not having a better community? That we don't have one to start with. Well, duh. Did Facebook start out with a billion users and more apps and features than you could count? I'm pretty sure it didn't. Growth has to be organic. But the organization in charge of overseeing that growth has to nurture it and you don't do that by doing nothing - which is precisely what WCG seems to be doing. Sure, it's nice that they're going to redesign the website and make improvements on that side, but do you really think that's what's going to make a difference? I don't. What do most people spend their time online doing? They spend it communicating, socializing. You don't socialize on a website. That's for one way transfers of information. When you see people on their phones and tablets, completely engrossed, it's because they're communicating. It's the social interaction that captures people's interest and will keep them engaged. WCG is either too shortsighted to realize that or too stubborn to admit it. But real bottom line is resources. There are two ways to approach this. One is the way we have be doing things. Hope people beat a path to your door and then ever so slowly and reluctantly commit only what resources you absolutely have to the make the necessary changes. The other is to make a commitment to what you're doing and treat it as if it were something you actually care about seeing grow, prosper and succeed - not in the distant future, but NOW. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Dec 19, 2013 10:12:27 AM] |

.....even Grorg had a better forum than this.....seriously though, I Admin a couple of Forums, PHPBB and Simple Machines, they have lots of what we have been harping on about but I have not seen anyway of getting something like our Badges in them
I would NOT want to lose our Badges, a great motivator for some, me included, so maybe that is why WCG is a bit reluctant to change....... ![]() |

Why I started on the BOINC standard forum is, it's BOINC world specific, is customizable, can be influenced by WCG on what features to add [notably, since badges, who's badges I don't know, were initiated to be shown in the BOINC Manager, WCG will likely already be involved of where this is going, and if they're not, maybe now is the time]. Dr.A's group in Berkeley will be doing the main code-work, and since it's open source, anyone skilled can contribute to enhance that product. For a number of things WCG is still not integrated in [no full BAM/AMS ability, no hot link to WCG on the account overview page to name a few things]. Maybe there is an isolationist undertone, stand out from the rest no doubt, but there would be added incentive for those not at WCG to venture over here to a 'familiar' environment.

That's well and good, but isn't this a completely academic discussion at the moment or by broaching do you mean to imply that some consideration is being given to the idea? Because if the latter, I don't see why this isn't something that can't be openly discussed. And if not, I'm not sure that I see the point.
----------------------------------------Personally this is one of the things that I find a bit frustrating. I understand that much of the planning here isn't open to discussion and that's fine. But I think it needs to be a relatively binary state of affairs. Either something is being considered or it isn't and if it is and you want input from the user base, then the easiest way to go about that is to simply ask for it. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
