Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Anyone else suffer from this?

there is no known cause, no FDA approved treatments and no cure for IPF. IPF is one of the few remaining diseases in which this is the case.

I was diagnosed some 12 years ago so I suppose that as most die within the first 5 years I must be one of the lucky ones. It seems strange that as many of use die each year as from breast cancer, but there is no big drive to find a treatment. crying

I had an aunt by marriage who died of cystic fibrosis. Her brother in Texas had died earlier with the same symptoms but had never been diagnosed with anything. For that matter, I have a medical problem and a theory (probably crackpot or faddist) of what sort of research might have come up with a cure for the basic problem before I developed complications. There has been a little research along these lines in mice the last three years or so. For at least a generation I have felt that research funds often concentrate on politically selected subjects and are not correctly allocated. One of the reasons I applaud the Gates Foundation for working where progress seems possible.

Re: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

A good friend has it but had a single lung transplant about 2 yrs ago... she is doing well, is back to work and is living life far better than could have been expected. In her case it is genetic as most of his siblings have died from the same as well as one parent

Good luck

Re: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

At age 73 they are not going to offer me a transplant.....and in any case I would not want one, there are more deserving cases.
Going reasonably quickly due to lung/heart failure appeals much more to me than losing my marbles and/or being bed ridden in a vegetable state wink

Re: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

I had a young colleague who died from this about 30 years ago. His was probably genetic. It took him in his early thirties. His was too far gone when they figured it out so no transplant could have been done.

Re: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

As far as I know mine is not genetic, not aware of anyone else in my family, past or present.

Here is an article proposing to develop drugs for diseases such as cystic fibrosis: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/12/131209181101.htm

Looks promising ....but
IPF is the result of an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own healthy tissues
whereas the research is concerned in fixing faulty folded proteins, whereas the cause of the autoimmune reaction is totally unknown crying

Have to go for an oxygen assessment on Monday as my blood SATS regularly drop below 80% with the slightest exercise such as carrying laundry up stairs, cannot now cut the lawns as I have to stop every couple of minutes.......employ a handy-man to do it now! wink

Re: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

This will sound crazy, but there has been some research that shows that eating what your immune system is attacking can cause it to become tolerant. I can't find a good article on the subject with a quick google, but here is something to show you that I'm not insane:
The goals of treatment of autoimmune disorders are to reduce symptoms and control the autoimmune response while maintaining the body's ability to fight infections. Treatments vary widely and depend on the specific disease and symptoms: Anti-inflammatory (corticosteroid) and immunosuppressive drug therapy (such as cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, cyclosporine ) is the present method of treating autoimmune diseases. Extensive research is being carried out to develop innovative treatments which include: anti-TNF alpha therapy against arthritis, feeding antigen orally to trigger tolerance , anti-idiotype antibodies, antigen peptides, anti-IL2 receptor antibodies, anti-CD4 antibodies, anti-TCR antibodies, etc.
