Now, here's a question for you all...is WCG green ? I suspect the answer is a resounding no. How many of us leave a PC or Mac on when we should turn it off ? If your systems are in a data centre with 24/7/365 up time and WCG is a background process on the zillion core server that needs only a few, then I can understand it...you've got capacity to waste and besides, you're leasing that hardware so if it breaks you just get a new server. But I know from bitter and costly experience that running WCG on a laptop that was left on overnight eventually fried the CPU. As it is right now, the fan is running in my iMac, but it wouldn't be if I hadn't got two cores doing Astropulse units for SETI.
How many people put a power meter on their PC ? You don't have to, just alter the settings in BOINC to use more CPU cores, the fan will get louder as your CPU gets hotter... Now measure if you can the increased power consumption...not so much fun now is it? We are encouraged constantly to turn off lights, turn down heating, boil less water, but how long before grid computing is included in that? For those who participated in my thread on the lack of variety in WUs and some said we do it for fun...we do but it's expensive fun. |

....also it appears to me to be anti-WCG in respect that it is encouraging users to do LESS in aiding the human race.......it should probably be deleted, or at least move to the chat room rather than a serious forum such as this!

I really don't care to be Green.

The WCG is 100% green if you are willing to put it 100% green.
My electricity supply is based on 100% green energy (wind, water, solar). I have to pay more for it than nuclear energy would cost me, but that is okay. The more energy I spend for the grid, the more money my supplyer earns. That money is used to build even more green energy sites. So you can say: WCG helps to develop green power, if users pay for green energy ;P A second point I would like to add is that one of the projects running on the grid is to develop green energy CEP1/2. Regarding your hardware issue. If your notebook was killed by heat, that is not the WCGs fault. You should use suitable hardware if you want to crunch 24/7. I had never any hareware issues, but I take care about cooling and quality hardware. |

The purpose of WCG is to solve terrible diseases that affect the inhabitants of this island we call Earth. It also used to find technical solutions to problems like clean water and clean energy production (sounds green to me). Now, from what I can tell you seem to be running CPUs for SETI... I wonder how looking for little green men is beneficial to humankind vs what WCG is doing? How many people put a power meter on their PC ? Yours is a political question, as all shades of 'green' are defined by the purveyors of political correctness, all of whom love any crisis that offers the chance for large governmental intrusion into the lives of the hardworking citizenry.
----------------------------------------My computer helps to heat my home, so I spend less on natural gas, so the heat generated by my crunching is not wasted ... unlike that heat that is so often generated by witless morons who think that climate science is 'settled', and we're all about to drown in rising seas. And, as others have rightly emphasized, anyone can buy green energy, just ask your utility. Thank you for any contributions to distributed computing you have or will make. ![]() |
