I do not find the question as being absurd. After all we do check the greenness of many many things, why not WCG. If we take the whole hardware that the WCG network depends on it probably runs into many megawatts.
----------------------------------------The answer cannot be global as the concept of the grid is based on individual contributions, so it is up to each participant to care or not about the topic and use the hardwre they deem fit for the purpose based or not on ecological concerns. In my personal case I was indeed concerned when I was pulling 6 kilowatts of power to run my WCG crunching farm. How did I deal with it. In two ways: 1) No air conditioning. Only natural air cooling. This means full power in winter and less at other periods. 2) 50 square meters of solar panels to reduce the carbon footprint. Now being in Switzerland I have a slight advantage. There is no fossil fuel used in the production of electrical energy. The electrical energy distributed on the grid has two origins. Half Hydropower and half Nuclear power. In terms of emissions, sustainibility and carbon footprint that is perfect. However Nuclear power is not ideal in terms of recycling of the disposed nuclear reactor fuel. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Sep 23, 2013 9:01:47 AM] |

Well, it may be valid to argue that all distributed computing is green, if we assume that the science must be done. If the science is done on a central super-computer or in a data center, the heat generated is mechanically moved to a location where it is simply liberated into the atmosphere, via some form of (expensive to operate) cooling system. If, on the other hand, the science is distributed over thousands of households, most of that same heat is used for comfort conditioning.
----------------------------------------Of course, if we do NOT assume that the science is worth doing, then maybe we should have a different discussion ..... ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Tomahawk4196 at Sep 23, 2013 5:46:23 PM] |

One could also come up with a conspiracy theory - BOINC&WCG is in fact sponsored by power companies ;)

In an effort to help the world, I have painted many of my computers green so I can truly say that my WCG work is green.

You can make it more green by setting your monitor to darken/turn off after a certain period of time.
