Going into Retirement!

My main PC is about 6 years old and it is time it went out to grass - GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz [Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7]
(4 processors)

Replacing it with -
HP Pavilion P6-2480EA (i5 Quad) fitted with Sapphire Radeon HD7770, which I think is a little better wink

Re: Going into Retirement!

Nice upgrade Alan! How many cores/threads will each CPU run?

Re: Going into Retirement!

Until I get my hands on it and see if each core can be hyper threaded I will not know.......still uncertain if run 4 cores single thread is better than double thread on each core.....still, even if it is only the 4 cores it will be better than the old one, and when GPU comes bach the HD 7770 is better than the HD 6670 that I currently have biggrin

Re: Going into Retirement!

Isn't testing a wonderful thing? I really enjoy the testing, configuring and general playing with settings to get the most out of each system! Enjoy and don't forget to keep us posted!

And good luck!

Re: Going into Retirement!

Ain't modern technology wonderful! It would appear that the HD7770 requires to be supplied directly with power, it will not take it from the motherboard. In the box they supply a power lead, somewhat similar to this . However, as the PC is a 'modern' design the power connections are of a 'new' type - don't ask me what type! Of course this type is NOT supplied in the HD7770 box!

The PC is from PC World.
The HD7770 is from PC World
I asked (and paid for) PC World to fit as I cannot be bothered.
They now want to charge me for the cable - cheek of them. If I did not want the PC soonest I would argue that it is their problem, not mine.....but again for the sake of about £4 I will avoid the aggro! devilish

Re: Going into Retirement!

@Scribe - If the power supply is any good, it should come with a 6+2 PCI-e connector, this is the type required by most modern GPU cards. some, in fact many of the bigger cards - ie Radeon ATI HD7970 use 1 x 8 & 1 x 6 pin PCI-E connector!

The problem is with PCW they use PSU's that are just big enough to do the job of powering the system they are selling and leave little headroom for expansion, it may not be the case here, but in many it is...

Hope things work out.

PS - I WILL NOT use PCW for any reason. But I'm a former IT Engineer, now IT Project Manager! I put a PC together in about 15-20 minutes!

Re: Going into Retirement!

Those machines have integrated graphics and a 300 watt PSU.

HP prolly dont expect their average user to slap a card like that in it Alan.
