Evening!

Thank-you for the welcome, I'm very new to distributed computing and have decided to put various bits of tech I've gathered over the years to some good use.

I only have a few low power consumption devices crunching, a quad core laptop at 1.5ghz per core, a Toshiba Encore quad core bay trail running at 1.4ghz to 2.4ghz per core, a motorola xoom and a Samsung Galaxy S.

What I lack in power hopefully I'll make up for in consistency!

I'm crunching for FA@H and MCM and am gradually working through forum posts, to get up to speed. The progress reports from the projects are the most interesting thing I've come across so far.

Any advice for a newbie, e.g. something you wish you'd known when you started?

BTW the other new member (hoolio303) is me as well, registered by accident - it's an inactive account so I've removed it.

Welcome aboard iamcornhoolio and nice to see a post, gives a bit of a chance to get to know a bit about you.

As has been mentioned several times around this thread, don't worry about not having huge crunching power as unfortunately not all of us can be like Mamaj!

Advice/something I wish I'd known when I started, well for me I wish I had found this place sooner. Temperatures and power consumption are something to watch out for. I have a laptop I use for a bit of crunching which I have on an old oven rack to aid the air circulation and also keep the fan vents clear, help keep those temps down. The electric bill will naturally increase the more you crunch so you may want to be a bit careful to start while you get some idea of what it will cost.

Not sure what the FAAH units are like at the moment but some of them a while back had long times between checkpoints so if you need to shut down the computer, check the properties of each unit to see when it last saved a checkpoint, that way you won't lose much work when you shut down. I often put mine in to hibernation as this shuts the computer down to stop using any power but stores the Windows session on the hard drive so when I switch it back on the computer carries on from where it left off and therefore no loss of work. This is especially useful if you venture in to the CEP2 project.

I'm sure there are other tips, of which many will be in this thread somewhere! (The brain cell is going in to sleep mode right now so isn't thinking particularly well)

And the reports from our resident statsman JonnieB are always much appreciated and help to keep us all informed.

Just do what you can as every unit crunched helps and enjoy it, drop by this thread and don't be afraid to ask any questions you have, just drop a post here and we'll do our best to help.
