Re: New Member

Morning team, that was a *NOT* a fun drive into work earlier, hopefully all this horrible snow vanishes quickly! I suppose a more sensible car would have been prudent, but it's a little late for that choice now!

And a warm welcome to all of our newest members! biggrin

After that bad winter 4 years back, I invested in a set of winter tyres. Do they ever make a difference on the white stuff!

Re: New Member

Evening!

Thank-you for the welcome, I'm very new to distributed computing and have decided to put various bits of tech I've gathered over the years to some good use.

I only have a few low power consumption devices crunching, a quad core laptop at 1.5ghz per core, a Toshiba Encore quad core bay trail running at 1.4ghz to 2.4ghz per core, a motorola xoom and a Samsung Galaxy S.

What I lack in power hopefully I'll make up for in consistency!

I'm crunching for FA@H and MCM and am gradually working through forum posts, to get up to speed. The progress reports from the projects are the most interesting thing I've come across so far.

Any advice for a newbie, e.g. something you wish you'd known when you started?

BTW the other new member (hoolio303) is me as well, registered by accident - it's an inactive account so I've removed it.

I did have a look at winter tyres, but I found 2 issues:

a) I have absolutely nowhere to store them for the 40-45 weeks of the year I wouldn't use them, and;
b) For my car, there's only one choice of winter tyres from blackcircles.com (I know I could get them elsewhere but just wanted a ballpark-figure), and they're a whopping £392 PER TYRE! biggrin

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I went for snow-socks (which I actually didn't need to use today) instead, as they were considerably cheaper at £70 for a pair...

Heh, not quite, it's a 13-plate Astra VXR with the Aero pack (it was a demo-car so the garage ticked every single "extras" box they could when they ordered it from Vauxhall). Standard wheels with the Aero pack are 245/35 R20, so they're not exactly subtle (or very good in snow)! wink

Re: New Member

Morning Team!

Ah, winter tyres. Here in Germany it's compulsory that we we have to switch to winter tyres from around Oct/Nov to around Mar/April. I take my car to a local garage who change the tyres and keep the second set for a small storage fee.
