Impressive stats for Soong. I was hoping to make some good progress against you in the absence of a GPU project, but it doesn't look like it going to happen. God help me when the next GPU project comes along. crying

Re: Morning Update II

I hate those fiddly little cables that plug between the case and motherboard, have only ever seen one case that actually converted it into a block-connector to make it easier (you plugged the pin-connectors into the block in the required order then plugged the block into the motherboard). Can't remember what the case was, but that was the only good part in a pretty mediocre case.

I build a few PCs and as a Mechanical Engineer, it amazes me that the case and motherboard manufacturers have not standardised these into a single plug.

It amazes me also, but when the Mobo Manufacturer can't even print their manual correctly??

I can't help wondering if that could have caused the Mobo any damage?

Re: Morning Update II

I did find it a little frustrating during the HCC GPU run that I only had 2 PCIe slots available - being able to buy a 2TFLOP supercomputer on a card for less than £200 and generate over 500k points per day was quite compelling, but I could only run 2 because I didn't have anywhere to put any more.

As it turns out, it probably wasn't a bad thing. If I'd bought more they'd have been idle once the project ended. I do have a couple of free slots now though, but won't be filling them until a new GPU project comes along. Apparently AMD are releasing new cards next month, and both NVIDIA and AMD will be releasing 20nm cards when TSMC have their fabs up and running.

Also, we've got HSA from AMD, Intel, Samsung & Co next year (with the first iteration in the PS4 and Xbox One later this year), along with NVIDIA's equivalent shared memory model. We could wind up with the CPU just sitting in the middle providing PCIe lanes and memory channels while the GPUs do all the work.

Whatever happens, it'll be an interesting year or two. Kind of reminds me of the early '90s when the FPU came on a separate chip (anyone have a 387?).

Re: Morning Update II

While I'm on, ASUS motherboards usually come with one of those little blocks - I don't usually use them though, and just connect power & reset. The HDD light can be a little annoying, especially if you're running a HTPC or 8 CEP2 WUs.
