Oh, you have me in a quandary, buy an old server now and upgrade later, or just wait for an 8 to 10 core desktop CPUs. I can use both.

Thanks Andy. I have just scanned your post but I will read it in detail tomorrow. I'm sure that my heat sinks are clogged but it is not easy with MBPs and iMacs to get at the business end of the heat sink / CPU. I do have instructions on how to open up my iMac but I have been a bit loath to do so in case something bad happens. More later.....

Good luck with that Rod, if you find out the particulars of the CPU's we can dig out more specifics on them regarding operating temps and maybe guess some performance expectations.
----------------------------------------Well done Bartough!!! As Dave said the other day, the team seems to be smashing it right now, there's some real momentum. With Reduk's sofa chips and other purchases (setting PB's every day!) plus everyone using Dave's site to review project performance and then if Mamajuanauk drops 96cores into the mix we'll go even more interstellar. Three days ago the Italy team had a 15% advantage and was closing in on us to pass in 2 years time (from 5 places below us in the points rankings!), now we are churning 3% more and moving away upwards, this is even before Red's new kit has plateaued for 7 days! With all this talk about more kit dare we dream of top 40 by the end of the year?
cheers,

Good morning all. Cool and cloudy today. Last nights promised thunder storms failed to materialise so now all is quite humid but at least I will not have to lower the pool level today.

Good morning all.
----------------------------------------Great to see 3thinking back on board (previous last result returned over five years ago, on 12.09.2011).

Good afternoon team. I'm happy to say that I have had no 3d rendering running since Friday and have limited rendering needed for this week so am hoping to make up some lost ground on the new projects.

Thanks for the link Tom.
----------------------------------------It is rather pricey, would rather do the build myself though as half my current hardware will be going into the new box as well. My machine has been a running build for 15 years now. The oldest part left is a 12 year old hi-def sound card, still going strong and sounds as good as when it was new. ![]() |
