@mac1, FYI found an interesting spec.org comparison from Intel: http://ark.intel.com/compare/64590,53579
----------------------------------------Foxconn (16c/32t) E5-2650 floating point: 428, integer: 524 - https://www.spec.org/cpu2006/results/res2013q2/cpu2006-20130404-25632.html DL580 G7 (40c/80t) E7-4870 floating point: 741, integer: 1100 - https://www.spec.org/cpu2006/results/res2012q1/cpu2006-20111223-19278.html Was thinking of buying a DL580 g7 for rendering as it'll support 3 x 300w gpu's so this just sweetens the deal! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by reduk at Feb 9, 2017 7:39:41 AM] |

Those HP's are absolute beasts, 39kg, 4x1200w PSUs (94%) but 80 threads of goodness which is basically saying 80 days of extra run-time every day. DL580 G7 When new cost just over $30K!
----------------------------------------Looking at that Spec2006 page, I like the throughput figures as well, I was wondering if we had enough CPU models and daily points tallies if we could find a test in their list of 17 (FP) which most closely predicted performance - I know each project is different but here's hoping. My cursory analysis of 3 chips; X5650 (Dual) Ubuntu 14.04 ~120K daily points I found the "444.namd" reasonable and some others in with a shout too. If that followed with your chips then you'd be looking at the HP doubling the Foxconn's output. Back to your shopping - Passmark scores the 2650 a bit higher when comparing single chips (but their test seems to disadvantage multi-core systems) - it's hard to ignore the Watts though. Passmark (Dual 4870) Passmark (Single 2650) It's a lot of power on tap in one box, if I had a rack with free electricity situated far from the flat it would definitely be on my shopping list! A couple of days to go on that one shown above - what do you think it will go for - £800-£1000 maybe? cheers,
cheers,

Good morning all. I've just read the last ~ seems like 50 ` posts and really I am none the wiser. I think I will stick to my 3 MACs which are slow and steady and should give me a Gold SCC badge tonight. My points haul however seems to be very up and down. 19+ days CPU time normally gives me ~ 70,000 points. Latest haul 45,000 for the same CPU time. It's beyond me what is going on.

@Mac1.. a little early to tell but 2 Foxconns would at first glance, appear to be on par with the 64 core AMD. Here's the first full days figures compared with some of my other hardware:
----------------------------------------Ubuntu, Foxconn, 2 x E5-2650 8/16 (32) core @ 2.00GHz 02/09/2017 | 0:034:02:05:58 | 119,180 | 368 Ubuntu, Supermicro 4 x AMD 6272 16 (64) core @ 2.1 GHz: 02/09/2017 | 0:067:00:03:29 | 258,447 | 767 Win 10, Asus Hero VI, i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz 2/09/2017 | 0:006:23:52:07 | 30,783 | 96 Server 2012r2, HP DL360 g7, 2 x X5450 4 (8) core @ 3ghz (90% max usage) 02/09/2017 | 0:007:04:52:34 | 26,375 | 86 Ubuntu, HP DL385 g7, AMD Opteron 6276 16 core @ 2.3ghz (virtualised) 02/09/2017 | 0:011:00:24:48 | 41,647 | 126 Re: DL580, maybe 3-400 euro's, are you buying it? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by reduk at Feb 10, 2017 1:17:00 AM] |

Morning all,
----------------------------------------@Reduk Yeah looks like it will but may need to run a few days to get up to speed as some 1st day results will be stuck in PV prison - to use Mamajuanauk's quote. Maybe we can start a table, if enough people drop their specs in. Re: DL580, maybe 3-400 euro's, are you buying it? Me buying it nope, very tempting but too loud (I don't think it's easy to tame those hot-swap PSU's) - I've got a 2 bed flat and a marriage. If it goes for that price it's a steal, people will pay twice the money for half the power in a workstation. Imagine a 40 thread 128gb workstation for EUR600-800, it's all about convenience.Damn it you've got me thinking now.... No, must resist, no, no, no, now perhaps that board can be powered by a standard PSU and the hot-swap 80mm fans can go - no damn it no!!! cheers, Andy

I've been reading your posts reduk and mac1 with some jealousy. I have a thinly populated four bedroom house, and a nice unheated utility room in which to tuck a non-silent crunching rig... no, no, get thee behind me Satan!!!
----------------------------------------Seriously though, my stats website is showing a dramatic increase in team crunching output since the end of last month, and particularly over the past week. Great job guys.

Why go with a mere 20 cores, when you can have 24?
