Re: Good morning team

Thanks everyone, I am feeling well, even a bit better than on morphine.
Really hopeful for the future for the first time in over a decade.
I am still relatively young and I am hoping that the new procedures and medications will allow me to have a close to normal life again,

My condition is not life threatening but it has left me with half the capabilities of my former self. Imagine being in severe pain every second of every day and that is what I have put up with for the past 15 years, Despite this, I try to be as upbeat as I can, but it can grind me down every so often.

I must have been a right b&$t@rd in a previous life.

My 20hr CEP Betas only ran for 3,5 hours, lets hope there will be more coming up.

Re: Good morning team

Good evening all from brassed off from Bolivia (see below)
DMNI it's great to hear that you are progressing well and let's hope that your 'miracle cure' becomes reality. Just a word of warning though - I have had several friends with life limiting problems that have been remitted - one (despite advice) felt so liberated he went out and bought himself a high powered motorbike. He got so excited that a heart attack finished him off - I believe that if he had readjusted to his new found lease of life a little more slowly he might be here today.

Right - Brassed off! So there I am this evening crunching a wodge of Betas (6 threads 12 hours completed) on my 27" iMac when the local power company decided to switch me off for 5 minutes. No problems with the Lappys but the iMac powered down (and yes - I do have a UPS (Useless Piece of Sh*t)). When it returned to life I was horrified to find that all Beta WUs had returned to Zero because the project failed to put in check points. That has cost me 72 hours or so of wasted CPU time. Needless to say that the air turned blue and my partners grasp of Anglo Saxon has improved remarkably. Grrrrrrr

Re: Good morning team

Hi RTS48, Thanks for the advice. My wife will prevent me from doing too much.

Currently, although feeling better, I cannot do a lot of physical stuff without making myself worse. This has always been the case no matter what meds I take.
Pacing physical activity is an important process that I have to stick too. During a pain management course it was discovered that I can do something for 6 minutes and feel fine, as long as I rest for 6 minutes afterwards. If I do 8 minutes I'll be a lot worse and then have to rest for 20 minutes at least.
You get used to doing the pacing and I can get a lot done through a day, eventually.
Funnily enough, driving is the only thing I can do without pacing, can drive for 2 hours before needing a rest.

That was bad luck with your Betas.
What reason can there be for not implementing check pointing?
Do you get a lot of power outages?

Re: Good morning team

No DMNI I don't get too many power outages although I reckon that the voltage fluctuates a bit. It's just rather difficult to judge whether it is us (domestic system) or them (Elec supply company). Generally it is the latter.
The distribution here is 3 phase and every off take has it's own transformer (mounted on the electricity pole - generally a tree trunk). A few months ago CRE (the electricity supplier) turned up and disconnected the transformer to replace it resulting in an unannounced outage of 6 hours. I tried to explain to them that we have 2 large freezers containing a lot of food but they just shrugged their shoulders and said it would be ready when it was ready. This was the height of summer with outdoor temperatures in the high 30s. Fortunately by keeping the freezers closed we were OK but I must admit we were worried.

Re: Good morning team

Morning team! smile

I can definitely agree with that acronym for UPS devices, Rod, I've completely re-wired my computer-desk at home to bypass mine again, everything's back in normal sockets again. That was due to the UPS occasionally deciding that, despite being on normal working mains power, it would just turn itself off with zero warning (obviously turning everything off that was plugged into it), so I've completely lost trust in it. The O/S drive in my main PC is already on its last legs, I feel, so it doesn't need any "scares" like that to push it over the edge.

Will definitely be buying a proper Enterprise-grade APC UPS, when I move house next (hopefully next year), I guess it'll teach me for buying a cheaper one (this one is a Liebert).

Good morning team

Good morning everyone. smile

DMNI It is good that you are making progress, even if the heart wants let the brain keep in control.

Thargor & Rod. Agree somewhat on the UP S***, they would work for the NT4 boxes reasonably well (AKA no major alarms). The ones used for the Unix boxes rather less useful (never powered down gracefully, this would provide an entertaining couple of hours). biggrin

Re: Good morning team

Good news DarkMatter.NI. Let's hope things continue to improve.
RTS48 - it sounds like your UPS is a waste of electricity, except it's probably providing a degree of smoothing, even if its battery is scr*wed. Time for a replacement? Tesla Powerwall?
