Re: This is the official SLASHDOT thread

Yes, this is great news. Might help dominating the Kentucky wildcats (BTW, their computing power is awesome !) ;-)

On this computer, I'm now running Linux, and therefore F@H, most of the time.
At home, the other Windows-based PC cannot currently crunch WCG because I switched to broadband Internet connection, and I don't think I can install the ADSL USB modem (that's bad, Ethernet modems are better for multiple reasons), even configuring it "by hand", due to stupid problems with USB peripherals (BSOD when plugging them).

Hey Lio!

You probably have faulty USB socket connectors on your motherboard. Try installing an USB card and work from that. My brohter had the same problem with his portable HD that constantly dropped inand out of the filesystem tree. He turned in his motherboard for a new one and then it worked, but if you can`t try that, then an add-on could also help.

Nope, it is likely to be a Windows-related problem. I didn't give much detail last time:
* IIRC, I used USB peripherals on a Linux LiveCD;
* I noticed months ago that I can use the USB port, if I plug the USB peripherals in *before* Windows boots.
Therefore, as the installation procedure requires plugging the modem in at a special moment of the procedure, I know that'll fail and possibly screw up the installation and the computer.
Thanks for the advice nevertheless. I bought an Ethernet modem/switch/router/firewall, because it will work on Linux, and doing that is easier and cheaper than changing the whole motherboard (the current one has no more extension slots) of that 5-year-old computer which doesn't like USB peripherals once Windows has booted.

Looking forward to the Linux WCG client !

Re: This is the official SLASHDOT thread

Great ! I've just downloaded the BOINC file. I'll try running WCG on Linux next time I reboot my PC under Linux (for once, I'm running Windows).

No news story has appeared yet on ./ as I'm writing this. You should submit one (I have to go). Be sure to mention that the project has previously been featured on Slashdot on 2004/12/30(31 ?), so that moderators can moderate "-1 Redundant" posts containing some form of mention that the news is a dupe ;-)
