With the soon to be arriving Linux agent I was thinking of taking the plunge into Linux. I had a brief excursion with Red Hat in it's 6.0 days but I returned home to the comfort and safety of Windows XP and knowing where all it's options are.
----------------------------------------To avoid paying Mr Gates his Windows Tax each time I'd like to add another cruncher to my arsenel what would you suggest is the best way forward into the wonders of Linux? n.b. whenever you refer to D*** Small Linux please remember that D*** is on nelsoc's blacklist Let the Linux debate commence.. Spooky or what Dave
I've been picking Mousie's brain on this myself over the course of the last couple of days. Apparently there is a bootable CD for one called Knoppix; I've been trying to download it but none of the mirrors are working I'm sure Mousie will be thrilled to read and post in this thread ![]() |

Hi dreplogle Yoper looks good to me. VAIO GRX616 I've got knoppix's arriving now via Bittorrent - The MOT website and chatrooms might be a bit slow for a while
---------------------------------------- What are you missing out on if you go for one of the smaller distributions. I've just bought PCPlus magazine as it has 6 small versions of linux ready to plunk onto a PC It's got D*** Small Linux 0.93, Feather Linux 0.7.3.1. Insert 1.217, muLinux14r0EB, Puppy Linux 0.9.8 and ZipSlack10.1 (You see it's confusing already, choices, choices, choices. If I go with one will it work with what I need it to do or will I have to reinstall another one so it will . This is Linux's problem it's not even installed yet and I'm already worrying - If you get me as a convert to the wonders of Linux happily crunching and not running any services that might compromise my machine then you will have one happy bunny who will support the Linux cause for a lifetime) Dave ![]() |

I genenerally recommend Ubuntu to beginners. Most things work straight out of box, It's got a good starter guide that will give you a how to on most things you'll want to do. Their forums are pretty helpful and newbie friendly, also.
I personally haven't tried Yopper, or the small linux flavors. I can't say for sure, but I think they make the smaller linux versions their size by cutting out programs and features. The livecd Knoppix will give you a feel for things without installing. Just scattered thoughts. Mandriva/Fedora/Suse...all fairly similar and good, though I think the support provided by Ubuntu makes it nicer for beginners. |

Here is an article about the Debian Common Core Alliance with interesting links: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1844684,00.asp
Does the Debian Common Core Alliance threaten our arm of the Galaxy? Perhaps not, since the Ubuntu Foundation has not joined it. |

Thanks Mousie
----------------------------------------All I can say is that's an excellent suggestion. Ubuntu works for me. It's superb. Everything easy to find. You never get the urge to shout "I'd know where this was in Windows" Thanks very much for the info more people should be introduced to Linux this way. You have a convert Cheers Dave ![]() |
