Have a great day all, Rick I am not expecting any major problems with any of your Linux versions. But I am learning things the hard way - mistake after mistake. ![]() |

mycrofth,
Somewhere in this forum, where I cannot recall at the moment, you mentioned I think that bbover3 posted something on slashdot regarding the release of the linux client for wcg. Do you remember that and if so could you possible reference a url? I can't find the reference anywhere but that may be because I am imagining things in the first place. Thank you for your time. dreplogle |

Hello dreplogle,
Somewhere in this forum, where I cannot recall at the moment, you mentioned I think that bbover3 posted something on slashdot regarding the release of the linux client for wcg. Do you remember that and if so could you possible reference a url? I can't find the reference anywhere but that may be because I am imagining things in the first place. On 7 Oct 2005 bbover3 posted in the SlashDot thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=3542#32450 Linux is coming in November. That gives us a big launch window to allow for glitches during the countdown. Hello and thanks, rwillis. Let me know if I could be of any assistance, I've been tinkering with various operating systems for more years than I'd care to admit. I'd be more than happy to donate system(s), and my time if you'd like the help. I'm not having real trouble. It is just that I am playing around with a cheap Compaq Presario without a floppy drive seeing if I can make it a dual boot system to keep the licensed Windows XP system available in a reasonably safe fashion. I am almost certain I will decide to raze it and rebuild the Windows XP OS from disk if I ever need a second Windows machine, The problem is that it comes with a backup system in the first FAT32 partition, then has the ordinary Windows XP in the second NTFS partition. So now I have added a third Linux Ext2 partition. Looking around the web, the only safe way I have found to control this sort of thing is with a floppy disk. Everything else looks . . . fragile. Which is probably a sign that I am trying to do something fundamentally stupid. But this is great weather for taking a walk, so I don't mind a little frustration. mycrofth |

mycrofth,
I believe your troubles are with the Compaq Presario architecture. I've used a Compaq Presario in the past as a dual boot machine - running W2K proc, and Red Hat 6.0, and had to use the floppy trick to maintain any type of stability with the Microsloth file system . I've never attepted it with XP pro, or home, but there are some small differences between the the two. I do have a floppy drive from a Presario, I could send you if you think it would be of any help in your testing. Have a great walk, weather is sloppy here..... Rick |
