Hi
I have a bit of a conundrum at the moment and would appreciate the views of others to help me decide what to do. In May my lovely rear projection tv decided to have a tantrum........put her on standby and she will not come back on. I conclude that either it has a power problem and protection circuitry is kicking in or the lamps have died. Anyway, the problem is that it is difficult to find someone locally to look at/repair this tv. If I do get someone to look at it, it is going to cost me £100+ before any repair is even performed or parts replaced.......and replacement lamps look like being £200+. So....assuming the lamps have gone (likely as the set is 4 years old) I am looking at £300+ to get the set back in working order. And then, given it's age....there is no guarantee that no new problems will emerge in the near future. A similar replacement set can be had for circa £700 these days. Would you agree that, given the replacement cost a repair is impractical? Just the nagging feeling in the back of my mind that the fault could be a minor one, and my attachment to the set that has stopped me parting with it thus far (oh and the cost of getting rid of it....no transport ).So I suppose I could narrow this down to a multiple choice question: A: Stump up the possible £300+ and get existing set repaired. B: Accept that repair would be a false economy in the long term and buy a replacement set for about £700. C: Replace the set with a smaller CRT television. These have the advantage of not needing replacement lamps, and easier access to repair companys should the need arise. The disadvantage is that I like large screen tv and the CRT's are just so bulky.....despite screen size the 40" projection set fits in the space well as they are wide but not very deep. Anyway........sorry for rambling but I would appreciate your views. As whichever decision I make is going to add a substantial hit to my already creaking visa balances...I really need to make the right decision. The final option would be a smaller (30") LCD tv but I don't think that technology's application is mature yet and I am sure they will continue to get cheaper. Cheap CRT til LCD matures???? Anyway........what do you think? |

Hey pup
As you know, I like Sony Generally speaking repairs are not much of an option IMO. There could be almost anything wrong with it - maybe cheap and simple, maybe not. If you spend the extra you get guarantee + a new toy Alternatively, you could pick up a 32" CRT for the same price as your estimated repair bill - smaller picture but tried and tested quality. And you want get the guilt of overspending. Less money now means more money in the future on chips 'n' things ![]() |

Yup.......I am leaning towards the "cheap 32" CRT now and an LCD tv when the market matures" line of thought.
Kids constantly turning tv on and off, and watching too much are such hard work for a lamp based screen. I watch less and less tv myself....and the rest of the family aren't too concerned about quality so a budget screen should do for now. The 3 months without tv has had a bonus tho.........no annoying playstation Would be nice to be able to view some of my unwatched DVD's.....about 30 of them as yet unviewed. |

Yup.......I am leaning towards the "cheap 32" CRT now and an LCD tv when the market matures" line of thought. I would go for this if you can get it at the repair price of the existing screen. I don't watch tv, however I do watch films on dvd - bought a 19" samsung comp monitor - very practical as it just stands on top of the dvd and stereo, so all the wires hang down the back - pleased with it! I guess it is one if those size/quality ratios issues ..... and depends on taste. Some presfer SIZE to quality... others QUALITY to size - LOL ![]() btw - I have never seen viao write so much - this must be really bothering you vaio ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 7, 2005 10:34:35 PM] |
