Well, with the "soon to be" available projects down temporarily to just two (FA@H & CEP2), I was wondering as to what everyone else thought was the 'optimum number of projects' that, in an ideal world, should be running on WCG?
----------------------------------------I know that, SN2S & DSFL are/will be soon coming back with more WU's to crunch, and that, at some point, HFCC will also be in the same boat, although my thoughts (and that's solely what they are), is that, as I see it, SN2S & DSFL are currently (or soon to be) temporarily out of available WU's due to the scientists not being able to keep up with the speed that WCG are chomping through them - possible (probably) due to the reduced number of available projects we currently have. Personally, I think, from a crunchers point of view, that half a dozen is an ideal number - my reasonings are as below; 1) as that provides choice, 2) doesn't "swamp" the various project scientists with a huge amount of WU's in a short timespan (i.e. they've got time to analyse what they've gotten back whilst at the same time, creating new WU's), 3) allows for one or two projects going temporarily 'off-line', 4) when a new project comes 'on-line', it isn't a case of "here and gone" in a matter of weeks due to demand (I suspect, that, when HFCC comes back, it'll take a lot less than the previous ~3 months to crunch, as the earlier targets suggest it would), and 5) keeps the WCG techs from having "too many plates to spin" (in the past, I do recall a comment or two from the WCG techs/admin, stating that 10-12 projects creates so much workload, that it's virtually impossible for them to be doing anything else). What do others think? ![]() |

Anything over 1 suits me fine

All valid observations though, for a significant number of users who choose not to/aren't able to crunch CEP2, project choice is restricted, at this time, to FAAH only.
----------------------------------------But its all idle speculation unless as a result of jhindo's assertion (in early May) that "... we [WCG] are starting to think about our communication strategy overall: what to notify members of and how to communicate that information WCG begins to communicate/interact in an effective and meaningful way with it's members.---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by jonnieb-uk at Jul 4, 2013 2:19:40 PM] |

I agree with 6 active projects. Does anyone know when the survey conclusions will be released? It has been a very long time...

Agree with 6 or 8 projects but also a choice of the diseases we crunch
----------------------------------------for. I was first attracted by HCMD (orphan disease) , HFCC (aiming at curing children) ,SN2S and DSFL aiming at neglected tropical diseases where under developed nations need our help. That shud make the originality of WCG. ![]() |

I'd go with four. Plenty if one or two go down and manageable for the staff. Furthermore, I'd expect ending and beginning projects to match up fairly evenly as the techs would have more time to devote to that end of the process.

As I can now only get 1 more badge upgrade from the standard projects, of which I am only 6 days off of getting, I will be leaving WCG.

Sure we will miss you ; but keep an eye on WCG projects as this situation is temporary

I like your rational, gb009761, about how many active projects we should have at any one time. The reality is that we don't typically set a min/max for the number of projects.
On the maximum side.. I'll admit having 10-12 active projects did stretch our capacity to bring on new ones, so we may have to think twice before expanding so quickly next time :) As to setting a minimum.. we go through a lengthy process to review proposals, evaluate the merit and feasibility of a research project, etc before agreeing to bring a project on board. We wouldn't want to abandon those checks just to increase the number of active projects. Also, we will only run work for as long as the researchers are getting value from the results (and not just for the sake of keeping a project active). Yes, we are down to a few active project right now, but that's only a temporary situation.. |
