Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

Hi cre8or, although I do share your sentiments/concerns over the current lack of choice in the project selection options, I'm sure that, if IBM/WCG were to close, they wouldn't be attempting, right at this very moment, to test, and once successfully worked out, to launch the ability to crunch on Andriod smartphones (see the current Beta tests). Also, talking about current Beta tests, the new Vina FA@H application is also going through the 'pre-launch' testing phase - which indicates that there's plenty of work to do for that project.

Yes, it's frustrating to be constantly "in the dark" as to when new projects will be coming through, but the techs have indicated that a new Cancer based project is well and truly along the path of coming to fruition.

So, keep the faith.

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

yeah,
I for one, wont be cooking my phone...
It gets hot playing any kinda decent game,
so i stick with solitaire and DESKTOP projects.

EDIT: I presume with quad core phones out there, that I was perhaps a bit,
what's the word when you look down your nose at something...
Anyway, phones will soon have more power than my old laptop that died not too long ago.
And at quad core would receive more runtime credit anyway.
It will be interesting to see how many flops we can get out of them.
Also, having a solar charger hooked up to it at work will spark conversation about WCG.

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

The word Temporary keeps being said. But no one is defining how long temporary is. We have all seen these projects dwindling down for a while now. And on one hand, I am proud to see that these projects have finished and they now have usable data for their research. But on the other hand, I am sad to see that only 2 active projects remain. and with no other projects on the horizon, or at least that I have heard about. I am worried that WCG will either fall or fail. Because IBM will not keep funneling money into WCG, if there is no purpose for WCG. This is just my 2cents.

The sky is not falling, the world will not end (tomorrow anyway). These things must be kept in perspective. Two projects were ended prematurely due to the sequester here in the United States, this pushed a much greater amount of crunching power to the remaining projects and quickly depleted what should have been months worth of work units for more projects.

Temporary is exactly the right word to use. It takes a little time to recover from unexpected kinks in the long term planning, but recover they will. New units are being generated for DSFL, other intermittent projects are expected to return and there is a new project in the works. I have a feeling we'll be overflowing with choice again in fairly short order. Patience is a virtue after all.
