Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

As I can now only get 1 more badge upgrade from the standard projects, of which I am only 6 days off of getting, I will be leaving WCG.

Patrick
Is that because badges are more important than people?

Yes, we are down to a few active project right now, but that's only a temporary situation..

Was starting to wonder if WCG was going to close up shop after the last project finishes. Seems allot of folks have left due to low amount of projects. At least its slow in the summer time as folks cut back due to the heat. I will too once I hit 10 years on DSFL if there are enough wu's. At 9 yrs 172 days currently.

No. I have been needing to cut down my contribution for years, as being unemployed for longer than I wish to remember as well as other issues, something has to either go or be reduced.

Patrick -- sorry to hear that you're having problems finding employment. BTW, if you were in it mostly for the badges, that's OK too. People crunch for many different reasons and we need all the crunchers we can get.

Hope you find employment soon.

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

Seems we are in a general downturn. fewer cruncher, fewer projects. I am one of the govt workers starting furlough this week-- four day week - 20% pay cut. staying with WCG for now but actually happy the GPU units ran out to save on electricity and AC. I'm hoping there will be another GPU project just about the time my furnace fires up this fall.

I might consider reducing too as the french government will increase
electricity tariff by 5% on 1st August and same again in 2014 .
Along with more taxes on retired (as we spend more for health) ....
But humanity is more relieved by humble efforts than by deep-pockets charity shows

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

Thanks jhindo for 'popping by' and adding the official word from WCG's perspective.

In my OP, I did say that "in an ideal world", and I know things can/do change - after all, I don't think anyone was expecting HPF2 & GFAM to finish so soon, especially so close to each other.

As to trying to rush new projects through without going through all the correct checks/tests, that's something that I'm certainly not advocating (it'd only end up causing more problems that it's worth, possibly soiling WCG's reputation at the same time).

No, I know that this is currently a temporary situation of WCG being down to so few active projects, and once SN2S, DSFL & HFCC are 'back onstream', then things will look a lot better (especially if you do manage to bring that new project to the grid in the near future).

As with everything in life, it's all just a balancing act of where to put your resources, which, as I (nor anyone else outside of the WCG inner sanctum) don't know what you're currently working on, we'll just have to hope that "things get busier to the outside world" soon.

I just hope that FA@H can carry the whole power of WCG until that happens - heaven forbid anything happening with that project...

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

While looking at this morning's WCG stat's I was surprised to find a drop in run time of approx. 100 years. beat up I hope this reflects the outage in Toronto and not a trend. I am not concerned with "how many projects" are active as much as how much run time is being done by crunchers. I hope the current trend is reversed.

Two active project left ...

"Ten little Indian boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Indian boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little Indian boys travelling in Devon;
One said he'd stay there and then there were seven.
Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.
Six little Indian boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Indian boys going in for law;
One got in Chancery and then there were four.
Four little Indian boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little Indian boys walking in the zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two Little Indian boys playing in the sun;
One got all frizzled up and then there was one.
One little Indian boy left all alone;
He went out and hanged himself and then there were none.

(From an 1860's Nursery Rhyme. There are many versions of this Rhyme. Note in current culture, "Indian" is considered to be a racist and pejorative term.)

Re: What's the optimum number of available projects?

The word Temporary keeps being said. But no one is defining how long temporary is. We have all seen these projects dwindling down for a while now. And on one hand, I am proud to see that these projects have finished and they now have usable data for their research. But on the other hand, I am sad to see that only 2 active projects remain. and with no other projects on the horizon, or at least that I have heard about. I am worried that WCG will either fall or fail. Because IBM will not keep funneling money into WCG, if there is no purpose for WCG. This is just my 2cents.
