Hands-off? Then you definitely do not want to use a GPU. In fact, you don't need a large buffer. Unless an outage is expected, I just keep a working buffer of 0.1 days with 0 extra buffer. In a year, I might lose 1 or 2 days computing, but it is easy to look at the small number of work units and notice any problems.
