Strange happenings on Win 7

I know this sounds silly, but I've run into an interesting issue with Boinc on Win 7.

From a clean install of Win 7 Professional with a clean install of Boinc (downloaded from the WCG website) installed as Service, the manager will not load work, nor generate any messages in the message log NOR the stdxxx.txt logs.

If I totally repeat process but install NOT as a service, the manager logs in and finds work to execute.

Now that is silly in/of itself, but it gets wierder.

Do the same thing (clean Win/clean Boinc) on a Win 7 Home Premium, and get almost same results, except the manager now generates errors in the message log (pasted below). When I go into project manager, log in, I receive additional messages (ending with final line...."Account manager error: file not found".

I clean the system off and reinstall (all from scratch) without SERVICE, and everything runs fine.

AND THEN the piece-de-resistance.........I do the same on a Win 7 Ultimate....and it all works as advertised.

Recreated the same tests 4 times on 6 different pieces of hardware with the same results, and always different hardware with different OS and different Boinc settings. What is consistent is that AS A SERVICE, my results "No Bueno" unless on Win 7 Ultimate.

I must add that I've been running on Win 7 Ult and Win XP for over 6 months now without issue. Once I upgraded (clean) the XP system, the strange things started happening.

Re: Strange happenings on Win 7

When you install as a service, which is by definition an action performed by the administrator [the one with admin rights], the latter has also gotta give permission to the user(s) to connect to the [by another definition] limited rights accounts/group under which BOINC runs in service [sandboxed]. Usually the simple selection in the same screen as where service/protected application execution is selected to also tick "allow all users", permits *all* non privileged users to connect the BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe) to the service (boinc.exe). If the system is multi-user and not all are allowed to access/manage BOINC, the one with admin rights has to edit the boinc group to add specific users. Long story short, when installing as service, choose "allow all users" and the problem goes away the easy route.

Re: Strange happenings on Win 7

P.S. Service has the advantage of always having BOINC running, without anyone having logged in or being logged in **. The disadvantage is that GPGPU computing under the Windows framework is not possible as the service gets no access to the display card [by security design of Seattle]. Running BOINC under user requires for the the authorized person to always be signed in [but can use e.g. Windows key+L to lock screen, maybe not counting XP]. Under Linux at least that problem does not exist. BOINC always runs as daemon aka service and you still can GPGPU compute.

** For instance BOINC starts up and begins processing after an autonomous boot.

edit: add note.

Re: Strange happenings on Win 7

@ Rob

Thanks for the response, and my apologies for my tardy reply. Been traveling.

Once I read your response, I realized I was not clear in my original post. I did select those options (all users, etc) in each case that I attempted the "service" option, as this was the way I installed it originally way back when it worked.

I truly think this is an "upgraded software" issue that only rears its dark little head when installing as a service on Win 7 (non ultimate).

I shortened the original post to conserve space, but maybe I should not have. Anyway...I've cleaned/re-installed again with the "all" options selected with the same results.

Interesting enough, this version is 6.10.58 and produces these results. When I reload 7.0.48 (from way back when), it works like a charm.

I didn't notice before that the version went "numerically down" until today.

When I look in the STDOUTGUI.TXT file, I get the following:
[04/05/13 20:29:22] TRACE [2768]: init_poll(): sock = 696
[04/05/13 20:29:22] TRACE [2768]: init_poll(): sock = 696
[04/05/13 20:29:23] TRACE [2768]: init_poll(): sock = 696
[04/05/13 20:29:23] TRACE [2768]: init_poll(): sock = 696

I'm going to leave this version (6.10.58) installed until someone provides more insight.

Thanks

RydeDivine
