Sorry Rudi....did not intend to create any nationalistic controversy.
----------------------------------------I am a marketing person and use the BATA approach: day 1 - marketing reports not to approach Africa because noone wears shoes there. day 2 - new marketing person reports to go to Africa as noone wears shoes there and the market potential is 100% +++ I find it hard to shut up when I know that the cause of crunching data for this project is one of humanity, not to mention the fact that I personally had friends who are no longer with us due to cancer whilst others live with a death sentence hanging over them and have to go for checkups every 3 months to hear how long they have to live....... Understanding the basis of a given decision requires the ability to employ the particular variant of insanity that existed in the mind of the decision maker at the time of the decision and the data available to them at that time as well Thanks for your input. My intention was not to prove or judge the people making the decision, even though certain statements may well be interpreted to having done so (..wrong decision etc..). Those people know what the circumstances were and what is driving them to stick to the decision now. As intelligent beings, we have the ability to learn, So if we know that there is something we can do better, we should do it better. That is how babies learn to walk, kids learn to speak etc.. If we don't apply this logic, then ... well I understand that dinosaurs were not very good at reacting to change and to making amendments to their original plan.... so we will end up in that category of museum pieces. |

RobSab--
We appreciate your statistics. These are useful and interesting. I want to clarify that our decision to implement French as the next language for World Community Grid is not about any relationship between IBM and Canada or any assessment of who is participating. This is plain and simple a legal issue. There are laws in Canada that govern the need for bilingual information -- for example, no software can be sold in Canada anywhere unless it is available in both English and French and products require that all information on the packaging be in both English and French. These laws also have an impact on web sites and whether anyone in Canada can participate. We respect Canada's laws and their tradition of bilingualism and we are complying. This is actually a long term commitment we made at launch. We are moving as quickly as possible to bring in a range of languages. Lewis Carroll— I agree with your comments about implementing a subset of national language support as a way to get some functionality out there sooner. I am meeting tomorrow with our team to start designing the multi-language support framework and we will keep that in mind. One issue we have is that currently registration is via the United Devices Agent. The backend UD database is encoded as ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1) and not Unicode. Therefore we are limited in what we can support in terms of userids. We will be allowing users to register via the website soon, but we are still hindered by the backend database version which we do not have control over at this point. We will look into the feasibility of creating this registration page using multiple languages first. Thanks |
