I think we can gain more users if scientists will post more updates on results of our contribution
----------------------------------------FAAH and CleanEnergy are good examples of such "good" activity of scientists |

Also (and I know that this has been covered numerous times already), topping out on all the badges at Sapphire (2 CPU years of crunching/active project) doesn't take long/much effort nowadays for the really 'big hitters' to achieve. Okay, it gives us 'smaller guys' a chance to reach such heady hights as the Sapphire badges, but there's not a whole bunch of incentive for those who've already got there to stick around. I think that keeping runtime as a unit for badges is a good thing in a grid that mixes CPU and GPU. In this way you have badges for projects and points for the global ranking, it is the right approach. I would have loved to have additional badges say at 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 years for example. Some projects will not last long enough for certain badges but others yes. An additional motivation for higher runtime badges is that it will reduce the impact of points ranking and equilibrate the distribution of crunching power between GPU and CPU projects. All of the above makes sense to me. But my primary purpose is to keep crunching for humanity so I keep my PCs running 24/7 and for years above 2yr Sapphire (one 3yr & two 4 yr projects so far) I change the color on my spread sheet. Coming up with additional colors could be a problem. A solution (which has already been thought of) would be to change the badge shape instead. Triangle, diamond or circle shapes could work using the same colors currently in use. |

I don't know about gaining more users, but at least keeping more users. A little of both wouldn't hurt, would it? The reliables would take so little, if any, to retain while the new ones would need so much effort and expense to maintain long enough for them new ones to possibly begin to see the same light that reliables are seeing. The response-curve, I feel like, may be different for large prospects like 'contributors', 'partners', and the likes.; ; andzgridPost#940 ; |

Thanks all for your input. the number of our contributing volunteers naturally fluctuates throughout the year for various reasons, e.g. things slow down around summer and end of year holidays. Also, we lose members when a research project ends (e.g. if they had selected to only contribute to that project) - after a certain period of 'inactivity', we do contact these members to encourage them to sign up to other projects instead. This has been fairly successful at getting members to contribute again. And since we do have new projects planned for 2013, we hope these will attract new members!
And we will review the input on expanding our badge offerings. The final point mentioned is that getting updates from researchers keeps people engaged - and we completely agree! We ask each research team to provide an update to our members at least once a quarter to set the expectations of a minimum level of engagement with the volunteer community. As I'm sure you all appreciate, the lifecycle of a scientific research project is long so it's unrealistic to expect the scientists to have much to report on a more regular basis than that. Our live webcasts (and their replays) are also a great way to help the volunteers learn more about researchers' work and set the context of where your contributions go. |

Excellent - thanks for chipping in on this thread jhindo.
----------------------------------------An increase on the top recognised badge level over and above 2 years is, in my opinion, something desperately needed (there's been a lot of talk/discussion about it over the years, and for the real big crunchers, it'll give them something more to race towards - thus giving them a reason to stay/come back to WCG). For the record, the last badge upgrade (Ruby/Emerald/Sapphire) was in July 2009 (Bronze/Silver/Gold being introduced 10 months prior - September 2008). As to new projects - that's something which will always bring new/entice back lost crunchers - you only need to witness the way people go about attempting to be the first to reach each of the current badge levels to see this. I know that, in between the last brand new project (CFSW - which was launched in April 2012) and now, there's been a lot of work put in towards getting GPU crunching possible at WCG, athough we're now getting towards the higher end of timespans between the launch of a new project. For the record, the time gap between the launching of HPF(1)/FA@H, and C4CW/DSFL was 12 months, and now we've already gone 10 months since the last project - with no sign (yet) of a new project coming through Beta testing. |
