Re: New GPU and all WUs getting computation errors at the start.

Umm, because I'd also like to run GPU tasks for wcg.

Anyways, tried some different driver versions now. All squeeky clean installs and boinc still won't recognize that openCL actually works on this card.

No luck. Driver Fusion had a list of registry entries that it would only delete if I got the paid version though. I could delete them manually but for now I'm too busy to try. I'll just run GPUGRID instead.

Use Driver Sweeper. It's free.

I used driver sweeper too, but that didn't find the registry entries fusion did.

Re: New GPU and all WUs getting computation errors at the start.

I would have understood your position better had you indicated 'I'll just run GPUGRID instead for the meantime.'

Anyways, I take it that you've tried Driver Fusion and you are aware of the particular registry entries manipulated that resulted, overall, to a correct driver install and with that a working GPU sub-system part. If so, why not now take the (time and effort)* to manipulate those registry entries after using Driver Sweeper?

Notes:
*Perhaps it was just coincidence or luck, but with all the talks about the proper install/un-install strategy for GPU-cards, I have never ran into problems using AMD GPUs even before OpenCL-computing. I have installed new drivers without un-installing the old driver and I have had no problems. I have installed new Radeon cards without updating the driver and still I have had no problems. There is perhaps no combination of sequence of driver or card uninstall/install/re-insatll that can introduce problems to my machines, Windows (pre-Win8) or Ubuntu (pre 12.10).

Re: New GPU and all WUs getting computation errors at the start.

Ok so, after some searching around I figured I'd try GPU caps viewer. Which upon loading gave me an error about openCL.dll in \windows\system32\

So I grabbed the openCL.dll from the nvidia driver package and copied it there and did the same to the openCL.dll in \windows\system32\

GPU caps viewer now starts without error and also shows my GPU to have openCL support. So my guess is that it's fixed. If not I'll come back here and ponder some more.

So what I think happened is: my old GPU started to die during an openCL app, that corrupted the openCL.dll in system32 (and maybe sysWOW64 too) and subsequent driver installs did not touch it there, leaving it corrupt and causing trouble.

Thanks for your attention everyone, hopefully this thread can die now :)

We'd like to hear some good news such as you no longer had computation-errors crunching WCG-WUs like you once did -- before we leave this thread to, not die, but like old-soldiers -- just fade away. wink

Those legacy entries are the ones that Windows includes with the operating system for compatibility purposes. You don't want to delete them anyway.
You don't need the paid version for this purpose.

Hello Dirk85,
You have persevered far past reasonable limits. Take a break and put your GPU on GPUGRID.
