Re: question: Xeon PHI cards and WCG

If it runs Windows 32/64 and understands OpenCL, you will be the man... but, since WCG has to maintain separate builds for ATI and NVidia, there would have to be one for the Phi [kicking the open door], and chances that coming with 1 on the grid asking for work... But, there's the other hurdle to take too... BOINC must be coded to recognize a Phi as co-processor, so you'd have to talk to Dr. David Anderson. The rule is, without exception, no Dr.A consent, no BOINC change. [so much for open source, but then anyone is free to take the BOINC source code from the repository and start coding themselves. Once upon a time some capable folk did and came up with http://code.google.com/p/synecdoche/ but it stranded. One of the coders, a former CA, build an alternate preferences interface which was so much smarter [I've tested it]. Sadly, some things just end up like this http://www.garlikov.com/philosophy/Sisyphus.html (become a CA and you might see a fraction ;P

P.S. I doubt the Intel guy even knew what BOINC was, so he may have been embarrassed on that point ;)

I know for sure that he knows what BOINC is. He ran it a while back..I have access to some of the best software people in the world if needed, still trying to get one in my grubby little hands.. biggrin

Re: question: Xeon PHI cards and WCG

Phi will come in original 3100-series flavor , plus saucy 5100 and 7100 series as well. This year should see the following models - 5120D, 3120A, 3120P, 7120P and 7120X. See the link for details.

If I've read the article correctly, the 31xx's will be available in 1Q. The new ones should be unveiled in May and available between May 1 and the end of July.

Both the 31xx and 51xx put out about 1 tera flop but with different performance 'envelope' I guess you'd say. For example the 3100 has a TDP of 300W but the 5100 is 225.
