Re: Dual GPU Setup (CPU Cores & GPU Task # Questions)

Gandalf,
Great to see you got multi-tasking on your cards up 'n running smile
Seems stable, so now try to go with 3 tasks per gpu card.
So have a crack at .66 OR .666 gpu.

Also you don't 'need" to be allocating a full cpu thread to each gpu task.

I would go down to .75 cpu at least.
If the .666 gpu works fine (12 gpu tasks), then with .75 cpu you will still have three cpu tasks running. Nice - 4 more gpu task at the cost of 1 cpu task.
That will probably be your sweet spot for those cards (if it runs without errors)

Good Luck

Your 1000w psu may be a kicker - but my 1600w Lepa is the one to rule them all !!

Interesting math. 1GPU/3tasks was .333 when I went to wizard school. biggrin

underwater - I modified the app_config to .5C + .5NV The CPU threads are accepting the .5 setting, but the GPU computation errored on a .333 setting.
I have another i7 Win7 computer that is running at .5C +.125NV, however it has only one GPU. I am thinking the unit with four GPUs is probably experiencing heating issues.

(1600 watt PSU?) showoff! wink

I wish there were a software program that could determine what wattage a computer was actually using without needing a multimeter. If computers can report on temperature, why not wattage. Sorry, just blowing off steam.

I moved one of my four GPUs to the 3rd computer. I hope that will relieve some of the heating issue.

I have set my NVIDIA GPUs to 0.5C + 0.5NV.
I have set my ATI GPUs to 0.2C + 0.1ATI.

Anything lower than these settings and I start getting errors. I've gone through a bunch of errors in order to get to these settings. A CPU setting of less than 0.5 for the NVIDIAs wont help any, because the NVIDIAs can't handle anything less than 0.5. I still can't get my second ATI working so I've sent for a copy of Win7. Since it's not working under LINUX, can't hurt to try Win7. Wish me luck.

Re: Dual GPU Setup (CPU Cores & GPU Task # Questions)

Gandalf, is there a typo in this bit, my bold "A CPU setting of less than 0.5 for the NVIDIAs wont help any...". NVidia is not excelling at OpenCL, where your ATI CPU fraction of 0.2C demonstrates that the CPU is well able to support 5 per core for 10 assigned to a single card of your series. 5 per CPU core is a stretch. You might see much greater throughput if you raised that value to 0.25 or 0.33... yes less CPU cores for CPU only jobs in that suggestion, but if you want to optimize it does require to compromise at times.

Re: Dual GPU Setup (CPU Cores & GPU Task # Questions)

Rob, I installed Win7 on my Linux holdout and bingo. The second 7770 came on line without any fudging at all. I've backed off the 0.2C to 0.25C. That is what you were talking about. Right?

I even got a bonus out of all this. I didn't realize that the Wallpaper would look so good with ATI. I like it.

Re: Dual GPU Setup (CPU Cores & GPU Task # Questions)

Galdalf, 0.25 for the CPU tag equals 4 jobs controlled by 1 CPU core. Technically possible, but suspect a still compounded slowness for the CPU sections of the HCC-GPU jobs. Do not know if the OS is smart enough to hop cores for tasks, when there's one not saturated [whole or part idling]. Just keep on trying to find the best throughput. BOINC just manages jobs, it does not control core affinity.
