Gandalf, if you edit into your above post what exact OS, we will be a little the wiser. Thx, and Crunch On. (edit, had not realized you had your problem(s) going in 3 threads, now seeing you mention LinuxMint) edit: 4 threads? That's considered spammy on some forums and gets you finger caned ;o) Spammy? finger caned? Are you saying that I am trying to fix to many problems via this forum? Problem that are BOINC related. I really do not understand what you are implying. I help out on the PCHF forums and I would never complain the a member that they are posting to many threads. We have even had small computer shop owners post asking for assistance and even they were not turned away. ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). DE: Cinnamon |

Note the wink at end of that line "some forums" ;>). (There was really only one problem... "R4W" FAICS)

P.S. The recommended way to close an issue [if you started it] is, to visit the OP (opening post) of your problem thread, select Edit button and insert [RESOLVED] in the title as sampled in this post title, then footnote in that OP post a short description of the solution e.g. "Edit: fixed by XYZ". This makes it clear to all browsing the Recent Threads list that a case is closed and does not bump the closed case thread to the top... these can sink now for the next who browses the Recent Threads or Support Forum lists for a topic with a similar problem description and seeing it has a possible solution in it.

If you set your CPU to 1.0 then you can only 8 GPU task. Precedence: 1) CPU allocation 2) GPU allocation You would loose a lot of performance (Points) if your running dual GPU on an 8 Thread CPU. For best performance, 1 CPU per GPU Task. Single GPU on 8 Thread CPU (130,000 BOINC Points): http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=host&proj=bwcg&hostid=1960059 Dual GPU on 12 Thread CPU (230,000 BOINC Points): http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=host&proj=bwcg&hostid=194307 I'm confused. ![]() I have two EVGA GeForce GTX 650 GPUs running on my i7. I run tasks for WCG Cencer research mainly. Cancer Research is the only tasking that is able to crunch via the GPUs. My BOINC Manager shows Running (1 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPU). With two GPUs my i7 is only crunching 6 CPU tasks and 2 (CPU + GPU) tasks. In reading over this thread (for what I could understand) I see "A 980X with 7950 is good for 12 threads." I know the 980X is an i7 CPU and the 7950 is the GPU. Your 12 - my 8 = 4. So, why am I missing 4 GPU tasking? Or, am I missing something here. Is this a setting thing or a WCG thing? Thanks. ![]() ![]() O/S -LinuxMint 64-bit, Release 13 (maya). DE: Cinnamon |

Please explore threads [quitre a few] discussing app_info.xml and app_config.xml which allow you to assign multiple GPU tasks to a single GPU and same or different number to a CPU core [in support of GPU tasks]. With app_config.xml [requiring 7.0.42 and up] it is much more simple than with app_info

I'm planning on making or buying two i7 computers with two GPUs each.
----------------------------------------I crunch for WCGs Cancer Project and they only use one Task per GPU at a time. I currently have two EVGA GeForce GTX 650 GPUs in a computer. They advertise as CUDA Cores: 384. While I'm real sure what that means, I get the feeling that it's overkill for WCG's one task for one GPU. For my new computers (total of four GPUs), what would be the least expensive GPUs that would satisify the crunching needs of WCG's Cancer Research? These units will be dedicated to crunching and not used for Gaming. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 23, 2013 1:38:43 PM] |

7770, cheap, low power, does +43K PPD when it runs 4 GPU task at the time.
----------------------------------------Edit: Per GPU that is. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by MStenholm at Jan 23, 2013 2:16:09 PM] |

You might reasonably consider a 7950 to produce over 100K BOINC per day running multiple work units but setting this up may take a bit more effort.
----------------------------------------I feel there would be advantages to doing this over running 4 cards in two rigs, power and cost being primary. ![]() |

Thanks guys. I decided on the EVGA 512. It supports CUDA. It's has a low profile to allow good airflow. And, the price is currently about $30 each. I should be able to install three of these GPUs on each motherboard. Crunch, crunch, crunch.
----------------------------------------Edit: Sorry guys. This is on the exclude list and I didn't look. I got greedy. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?283352-HCC-GPU-Launched. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 1, 2013 3:03:53 AM] |
