Re: Comment field for device profiles

That's what is called "A public secret". I've not been initiated on the quantitative use.

Some refer to switching to their "beta profile" or their "hcmd2 profile" [some seem to have profiles for every active science] so there are/were active users. Can think of a VINA profile. My 64 bit Linux 12.10 quad races through these 64 bit app sciences... 60+ percent and up faster. Anyway, it's the numero uno way with more than a half dozen devices to get a very granulated control of what runs on a device without messing with app_info.

To underscore: Those who use these profiles and also crunch outside of WCG might see unpredictable effects. Only WCG knows those profiles!

Re: Comment field for device profiles

I'm sorry. I don't mean the user/project/device specific profiles. That's too esoteric for me and probably for 99.9% of most users. What I meant was how many people use profiles at all.

Re: Comment field for device profiles

Touching the Default or creating Home/Work/School? Think there are many many, many many, but in need of more than 4 profiles... a select [active] group only [the inquisitive found on the forums].

Those who want to do bulk science selection, applying to all profiles in one swath, use My Grid > My Projects. These I picture to be the users that only use the 4 presets [Maximum Output, Standard, Power Saving, Minimum Impact]. At any rate, a fair guess, techs of course be able to give a percent, and thus see if a request has merit and is feasible for putting it

1) On the Wish list.
2) Determine degree of effort needed to implement and test
3) Move onto planning list with priority marking.
4) Schedule for programming.

Re: Comment field for device profiles

So since so many people use the 3 supported profiles, perhaps it would then be useful to have a user comment field that would appear on the device profiles page.

Re: Comment field for device profiles

Covering the toast with butter [or vegetable margarine, for the health conscious who have a BMI of 18.5-24.9]. Took 8 years and 7 days for the idea to sprout, but what you're wanting to do [for my own visualization] is, to enter [This is the profile that is related to the XYZ devices for reason ABC etc].

Can think of another filter view: One that lists all devices that are associated to a certain profile, or at bottom of the opened profile a list that shows which devices are currently associated to that profile, which would be especially helpful for those that manage farms, with a wide variety of application and use.

Note that if you change the associated home/school/work profile as "default", what it really does is that when a new device is registered, it gets linked to one of the 3 user created profiles with standard names. If none is selected, the message log printing there was no selection, using "Default", so not to be confused with "default" i.e. school/work/home. Interesting, if missed, default can also be set as default... oh heck, I think I need Evernotes.

Re: Comment field for device profiles

I'm sure there are plenty of enhancements that would be useful for advanced uses, but that's why I was interested in how common it was for people to use profiles at all. What I'm really trying to focus on here is something that will be widely useful and therefore used. Since the profiles are widely used but the designations aren't especially descriptive and the only alternative is something that is unsupported and difficult to use, a comment field seems like a good compromise to overhauling the whole profile system.

By having the comment field users could turn the non-descriptive terms school, work and home into something that is actually meaningful to them.

Re: Comment field for device profiles

school = basement
work = garage
home = attic
default = settee

Yup, *that* has been a long standing issue for many in the memory banks department. The admins/techs read it all [but wont let on most of the times, as typing out a response is committing more time to a conversation]

It seems to me that you and CA SekeRob are not on the same page.

CA Sek:
If I understand what twilyth wants to talk about, it is the idea of using a comment-field for the profiles independent of what mechanism's are in place as to how profiles actually work, could work, or should work on one hand, or on other hand, independent of what the ultimate purposes are and the means, justifications, or rationale thereof for the use or none-use of profiles.
