Since my memory is toast as evinced my recent screw up with one of my server profiles, I would find it EXTREMELY useful to have a comment field next to each device profile. Even something as small as 256 characters would be helpful but something a bit larger would be preferable.
----------------------------------------I don't think this would be difficult to implement but I would like to hear what the staff has to say about it. And obviously all other opinions are also very welcome. Thank you. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Nov 22, 2012 9:36:37 PM] |

Installing Evernote (its headline is "Remember everything"), or something similar, would be much faster than waiting for re-programming the WCG web page.

Evernote is great and I've already added a note for that. I do love Evernote and my database is quickly becoming massive. I even subscribed to the premium service a few months ago.
----------------------------------------But for everyone else and just for the average user who may not be that computer savvy, I think it would be a nice enhancement that shouldn't require much effort to implement. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Nov 22, 2012 10:29:34 PM] |

Using an Evernote should fit the bill, but the comment-field seems to be the best. It would feel like one's blog: personal and very much like home. Only a few lines of HTML-code for the webpage should do the trick, I'd say.

Only a few lines of HTML-code for the webpage should do the trick, I'd say. Nope, not just "a few lines of HTML-code"... You also need to add at least a field in the database for each device profile to store this information too. And extra storage spaces for this additional info. And maybe many other stuff that I can't think of... |

I used to write code for online systems. Granted it was in CICS and we use VSAM for data storage not a true database, but I'm sure the basic principles aren't all that different as I'm also trained in DB2 and various PC databases.
----------------------------------------Yes, you'll have to add a field for each profile, but it will be a free form text field that won't have to be error checked. Most of the code for online systems is devoted to checking for user input errors and making them idiot proof, or as an old gf used to say 'Olga proof.' If no one uses those fields they don't take up any storage, they just get a null value. If storage is an issue, the staff can put a low character limit on them. But really, speculation doesn't get us very far since it's their opinion that really matters. I would however like it if people posted to say if they thought it would be useful - maybe not to them personally since I imagine the people who post here have their own methods and mnemonic tools like Evernote. But do you think that the average WCG user who makes use of the profile feature would find it useful. Maybe the CA's could chime in as to how well utilized that feature is. If only a few percent of crunchers even use profiles, it may be a moot point. ![]() ![]() |

I would find it usefull. Even 32 characters. Default names are not usefull at all, as I have 5 computers in one room: 3 on default, one on home and one on work profile :)

Do you remember which of the three is your default - work, home or school?
----------------------------------------You see, that's what screwed me up. If you happen to go into the one that is the default it does tell you, but I think there should be a note next to where it says 'default' saying either 'home', 'work', or 'school', so that you don't have to go looking when you forget. OK, this is a separate issue, but a memo field would let you fix that problem for yourself. ![]() ![]() |

Aside for the device manager already listing out the devices and their profile association [It's where I go to ensure I click on the right profile for a device], there is still that illustrious [allowed but not supported] "creating your own profile names". Step 1 is opening a profile, change the address-bar, hit enter, then hit save and voila a new profile is created, listed under device manager > device profile [Just tried it and it still works]. Associating the profile to a device is a bit more tricky [those homebrew profiles don't appear in the dropdown pick list of device manager > click device name, select profile drop down list]. The manual is somewhere on the forums [think it was Moonian who created and maintained it]. Might have even linked to it on the Start Here FAQ index... it's foggy in the gray zone.

Do you have any idea how many people use the profile feature?
