Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

Thanks Uplinger. With turkey fast approaching, may be a good idea to crunch something else until the scientists tell us what's next. No reason to idle a computer when other projects can use our computers. The techs and scientist deserve a great turkey day too. Have a happy holiday!
Do I need to call Cypher for him to try decrypt the OP's message? Nah, I'll probably be overwhelmed by what I would hear. Ignorance is bliss and that turkey wouldn't taste that good otherwise. wink

I can't decide if this is good news or bad laughing
Thanks for keeping us updated.
It's good news, it means we're processing lots of results for the researchers and helping them towards the next step in their process.

Thanks,
-Uplinger
I'd speculate that the HCC-scientists got too much of a good thing (enthusiastic response for GPU use from WCG-crunchers), that the only logical thing to do next, is to take stock of how they (including WCG higher-management) have used the GPU-power, and see if there may have been some wastage or inefficiencies somewhere in the GPU-usage pipe from the crunchers to the actual use of the results. While at it, might as well take another look at allocation. I can imagine that the HCC-project have deprived other WCG-projects of their share of the cruncher-compute-cycles, and that too needs to be addressed. We can't have a rising star at the cost of all others -- this is not sustainable. Until we get another WCG-project that is GPU-aware to compete with HCC-GPU, we are left with a lone star project that dominates the GPU-use landscape at WCG. Over a nice turkey would be a good time to take stock of all these concerns, indeed -- and that means: a time-out was called by team WCG. coffee

Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

I just heard about it and personally I think it's bad public relations...especially for people who donate their time, equipment and electricity for free.

You guys start a new gpu project, get everyone all excited and with practically no notice, you suddenly announce that you are running out of work...Say what??...GEES!!!

Not necessarily me, because I only bought 2 used GPU's, but some people have spent thousands for equipment upgrades just for this purpose.

You folks knew work was running low for a long time and made no advance effort to prevent the problem. That spells incompetence.

Not only that, but you don't even have the common courtesy to provide a time-frame for the unit outage...so let's add arrogance to the list.

I don't know what all this nice-guy stuff is about, because you should be told that some of us are not only disapointed, but also quite angry.

'Angry' is too strong. We all knew that this was going to be short-lived and were given enough warning that investing in high-cost Hw was not to be recommended. True, some did, but I think those that did knew the risks they were taking.

Personally, it gave me the impetus to make a small investment in 'last year's' HW, but I feel justified in doing so because for a long time, my machines had been running headless.

One thing I would encourage people to think about over the next few days is the impact of idling machines on the offchance a few resends. It would be very ironic if some people here were crunching for cleaner energy whilst others were letting resources go to waste. Now THAT would make me angry...

Yeah, we don't need any more anger on the interwebs, so please remove your angry wig.

Everyone is still groping a bit for the right balance of processes and systems, and everyone understands that a lot of folks are volunteering a lot of resources. However, while we all feel a bit frustrated, let's maintain some perspective - in six months or a year when GPU work units are a normal part of most projects at WCG, we'll laugh about these little technical bumps .... but the anger expressed (especially in forums that linger for years) will be remembered, and not fondly.

Chillax, have a beer, and we'll see what Monday brings.

Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

Maybe I misunderstood but are we talking as if the project is over or just on a temporary hiatus due to logistical issues. It was my impression that Uplinger was very clear that it was the latter but my communication and sometimes comprehension skills DO leave something to be desired.

Personally I made my investments with the expectation of 3 months more worth of work, more of less. For me, that was worth buying 4 7950's and 2 7870's. But you have to put that in context. I also built 4 2P servers this year - 1 octo-core, 2 hex, 1 quad and I have another 2P quad ready to go. When you consider the cost of just a server motherboard and compare the ppd produced, it's a pretty good "investment."

Of course all of that changes if I get the rug pulled out from under me.

To those complaining

No one made you go and buy new hardware for this one specific project which you knew was going to be short-lived.

In fact, before the gpu project even started I remember people from wcg discouraged buying new hardware specifically for one project.

Its not the end of the world or even the end of the project. Cheer up.

Re: Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

This isn't the first time that a WCG project has temporarily run out of work (okay - a first for a GPU based project, granted), although I'm sure that everyone is busily working behind the scenes (as always) to get things back on track.

As it is the very first GPU project on WCG, I'm sure that there were quite a few surprised people as to the speed the HCC WU buffer was gobbled up - and I'm sure that, lessons will be learnt.

All that's required, is patience and I'm sure that things'll get back up and running ASAP.
