Low Work for Help Conquer Cancer ( Nov 20, 2012 )

Greetings all,

We are currently running low on work for Help Conquer Cancer. At the moment of posting this we have about 1 hour of work left to send on the grid. We are running through many work units per day as you may already know and we are working with the researchers to get more work units onto the grid as soon as possible.

Normally we would slow a project down to help keep the project running on the grid. But this solution will not work since it is our only GPU project. So, to keep things fair between CPU and GPU we have decided to keep the weight normal until we run out of work.

This is not the end of the project, we are low on work from the researchers.

Thank you for your participation and patience as we get more work for Help Conquer Cancer. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Wow O.o are we through the 100 days remaining, or are the "100" remaining days not fully on the servers from WCG?

We do not store all the incoming workunits on our servers until they're needed. The input files alone for HCC1 for storing 100 days of work would be about 5TB of storage (my quick estimate). We try to keep about a 10 day buffer of work for every project, but there are many limitations which causes that number to usually be different.

Also, just got the first warning about being out of work. Should be sending only resends very soon.

Guess its time to reconfigure at least one of my crunchers so I don't run dry. Sounds like we are getting close to the end of HCC. Lets hope for another GPU project coming along soon. wink

I've got two computers running GPU only with an App_info.XML file. I've got to leave them unattended for a few days. Do you recommend pulling the app file to allow them to get other work?

Probably a good idea. You can always change it back when your around to monitor it and there are more to crunch.

If you still want to crunch (something) you can pull the app_info, or else they will not receive work during on HCC outage.

On the other hand they might get more work right away and we won't have to worry about running dry.

Its up to you really.

What I did in the beta phase was to run POEM as a backup when the HCC betas were not available. You can do that by setting the "Resource share" for POEM at "1", while leaving it for WCG at "100". (You can find these on the Preferences and Device Profile pages for each project, respectively.)

It keeps the GPU busy with HCC when they are available, but automatically picks up POEM when they are not. It looks like I need to do that again.

But it probably won't work with app_info, unless you allow both projects, though I haven't tried that.
