Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

Agreed. But it is the lack of additional apps, WCG or otherwise that is preventing me from buying a GPU for this project.

They obviously still have some hurdles to still overcome on this app. There's no reason that the CPU is needed for quite some time after the app has already ran in order to finish. I also wish they would pack more units into the WU itself. Having to start and stop so frequently is incredibly inefficient.

That won't help. With two, it still starts and stops after each one.

There are parts of the calculations that can't be ported to the GPU. That's why the tasks start and end with the CPU.

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

Gotcha nano

Blade, I'm saying with switching between WUs. There's already several images in each WU if I'm not mistaken. Having more per WU would prevent there from being so many WUs to process, if more images were in each one.

Or,if the CPU could be doing its part after each image while GPU is still in use, working on the next.

Obviously I don't know what is being done on the CPU, but waiting for quite awhile for it to finish while the GPU is idle bugs me.

Just to make this clear, I'm very happy that WCG has a GPU app, but until we either have a better idea of how long it will last, it's just hard for me to consider purchasing a ATI card, since AFAIK, no other BOINC medical project really uses them.

The 8xxx series is coming out soon, so hopefully the length of HCC GPU will be more known by the release of Sea Islands and I can go from there.

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

I'm using a machine I've "retired" from household use to just go to town down in the basement for WCG. It's not much but it's something. It has an nVidia GT 430, XP Pro, BOINC 7.0.28, 2 GB RAM and a 2.66 Dual-Core Intel. I am using the latest video driver as of this posting (3.0681).

The card is not on the "does not work" list and I saw some results posted earlier in this thread that shows the GT 430 works but every last work unit over the past several days has received a "Computation Error" as a result (GPU processing only, regular processing is fine).

Shall it be added to the list or is there something else going on here?

You've also got POEM@home under the biology/medical heading, but for the moment they're having some problems with work-supply for GPU's.

If you're going non-BOINC you have Folding@home, but Ati-cards has always being mediocre in this project so you're better off with nvidia here.

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

Grasor, I have 3 GT 430's in my home and one in a borged system. I can tell you that just recently I began seeing an increase in errors, but I'm still getting the majority as valid. Nothing has changed on my side since the GPU work went into production. So, if you are having all of them error out I would start analyzing the possibilities with the system. XP is no longer supported by nVidia, so new drivers probably wont go very far for you. However, I would start there.

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

knreed,

Please edit your post - http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34078 as it contains cards that are excluded from participation ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#610 ) such as:

GeForce 8800 GT
GeForce 9400 GT

Thank you

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

The post you link to was only a performance sample [at the time]. The only list I'd think that has to be maintained is in Help, to avoid duplication of effort: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=GPU#610

AFAIC, the GeForce 8300 GS can be added to the official list too. Zero success.

Re: GTX 465 vs. GTX 650TI

I've gone ahead and modified my post to clarify that it was a point in time performance snapshot and that the FAQ post is considered the official list of disallowed cards.
