Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Face it, your next off the shelf computer or laptop will have this latest OS on it and BOINC inclusive from v 7.0.31 or so has been made ready for the Metro-market. Not a place to ding MS, we know, we know all and every gripe in the book about MS products, this tread to share your tips and tricks to get other crunchers along, or learn something new yourself.

This one for starters: The shortcut keys that are operational at the opening screen:

Work Smart: Windows 8 Shortcut Keys: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34770

A review for those that don't know anything yet of what's coming as of October 26: http://activewin.com/reviews/software/operating-sys/windows8/

P.S. Don't fear, you can switch back to the trusted W7 and earlier interface fairly easily.

Bring it on.

edit: Knew there was something about Oct.26... it's the launch day of the latest BOND franchise movie... an Adele theme tune coming? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HKoqNJtMTQ

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

I just purchased a laptop (sweet deal) before win8 came out just to avoid it. Have heard both cons and pro's about it. Will be reading this thread with interest to see how it pans out. Sooner or later we will have to upgrade anyway.

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

You could just always buy Windows 7, and then any new computers you get just re-install Windows.

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Well, I'm happy with Windows 8. I even got used to the new theme and it is just takes a few days to get used to the new interface and the new shortcuts. I downloaded my Windows 8 Pro from my Dreamspark Premium account and there is no going back to Windows 7 for me :-)

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Windows 8 and the Avast AV are not playing nice [BSOD's out of nowhere pointing at aswnet.sys]: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=107886.75 . The temp remedy is to disable the web-shield element [which I actually consider one of it's most important pieces]. Have now had this [fill in the blanks "event"] over a dozen times. The linked thread actually has towards the end a patch procedure to get all working in full: http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/

BOINC, suddenly [when you lock the user], you'll have several additional users to choose from in the boinc_master and boinc_project. Not good and reported at developers. Also BOINC will unload, unless explicitely installing it as service and or installing it on a local account. *DO NOT* install when in a Microsoft account or you'll find your results being lost each time you log out of hot swap to other user, *each time* registering a new device at WCG. Managed a 9 so far before knowing how to remedy. Developers as said informed and problem persists through 7.0.38 dev release. Some say they can't reproduce [of course]... but if you have it, it's known.

And now for tips in the plural: A handy site maintained by Vishal: T&T and utilities to bend W8 to your hand http://www.askvg.com/how-to-permanently-set-p...-in-windows-task-manager/ Like this one particularly, as some W8 service functions are set rather aggressive such as file indexing, local and across shared resources.

I saw a bunch of PCs for sale at my local computer store. "Buy a Windows 7 PC and get Windows 8 for $15". Must be really hot stuff..... sad or something to do with market share. wink I'll w8.

Having applied the Avast patch procedure and done a series of lock/log-in/hibernate/resumes, no more blue screens [At least the BSODs in W8 stay up so you can read and copy-write what is failing].

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

"On" the topic of sharing tips and tricks for Windows 8, there's a book out, of course titled Windows 8 for Dummies or as it would be called in Italian "Windows 8 per Negati" (Less fist on the chin meaning "Windows 8 for the talentless" ;>), an addendum on how to configure multiple monitors, which seems not to be a straight forward, as by now one would expect.

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Dear Microsoft

Windows 8

Dear oh dear

As your practical monopoly of the PC (Apologies to all the Linux MacOS Chromebook iOS Android Fans) is based entirely on familiarity with your UI since August 24, 1995 I need to ask...Why?

First - before I mention the atrocity that is the removal of the start button - when did windows programs become apps?

I have spent a week with windows 8 and been the IT support for nieces and nephews new laptops in the prep for christmas which have arrived with this abomination and they all want skype why I am not sure, as a VoIP Telephony Engineer, but they do so you go to Skype.com to download and install the file and what happens... you already know Mr Microsoft.. the webpage says go to the app store to install Skype

aarrgghh <-- this happens a lot with Windows 8 biggrin

It sits there "Pending" and you are never quite sure as there's little feedback from your PC unlike the good old days when your browser would have a progress indicator of the download and also when you installed a[n] program app.

Talking of Browsers.... your latest version of Internet Explorer...Why?

(There's a whole rich seam for a thread right there)

So Skype becomes a double tile on the front page

So there's a button marked Desktop

Which bright spark thought it would be a great idea to remove the start button? Come on we need names? A toolbar without access to the applications???? Apart from the ones on your desktop

So you think I know what I'll do I will create a short cut on this desktop to Skype right click new short cut search for Skype.exe or some such ...easy.

Not possible is it Mr Microsoft as Skype.exe isn't on the PC is it? It's an app and will be accessed from the opening screen like all the other apps of it's ilk

aarrgghh <-- there another one biggrin

Have I mentioned that familiar access to all your PC's Internals the Start Button is missing

Maybe all those "You shut it down by pressing Start" jokes got to you in the end but this is not the answer ... just removing it

What possessed you to develop a dock on the right hand side of the screen? Which pops out when you hover over the very place the close program app minimise program app maximise program app buttons are on every program app since that great day in 1995 and also in the bottom right corner where scroll down is in all windows programs apps

When did scrolling right become the paradigm for seeing more stuff on your screen ... I must have missed it biggrin

Mr Microsoft your new Phone operating system masquerading on my desktop has had me shaking my head in disbelief way too much over the last week. I installed it on one of my crunchers last weekend and going in to work on Monday and talking to the server guys the mere mention of Windows 8 elicits only one word ...Why?

I could go on but I won't

I suspect Windows 7 64 bit in whatever flavour you can get your hands on will become rich contraband going forwards

For Windows 9 could you put it back like it was?

Without that familiarity Android and iOS will become the de facto standard and Windows Operating Systems will become a footnote in history.

...right I wonder what that latest version of Ubuntu looks like....

Dave

p.s. Why have I had to resurrect my MSN messenger account just to log into my PC? <-- This is the greatest security risk of them all...ever

p.p.s In light of Windows 8 you are now forgiven for Millennium Edition biggrin I promise never to mention it again

Tips and Tricks for Windows 8

1) Stay with Windows 7 64 Bit editions

There is no 2 wink
