Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

w7 will live for a very long time. I do not plan on any more window upgrads. I figured microsoft to be the same old microsoft when they said w8 was comming. Evry other operating system by microsoft since w32 came out has been very bad. Now I think every new OS by mirosoft will be very bad. THE DAY'S OF OS'S HAVE GONE; BUT WILLL LIVE ON WITH W7.......

Tips and Tricks for Windows 8

1) Stay with Windows 7 64 Bit editions

There is no 2 wink

If someone would work out an elegant method of getting GPU's to run BOINC projects in Linux, M$ would be toast around here.

Sure. I would rather buy another 7750 (or 7770) for my rig instead of W7 sad

When the 90 day W8 "trial" runs out my 6450 will be parked again

I trialled it - I will now be skipping W8 and Server 2012 (Which unfortunately is built upon and looks the same as W8)

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Windows 8's biggest advantage is that it has much better security.

Secure Boot. It takes advantage of UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), the modern-day replacement to the BIOS.

A BIOS can NOT tell the difference between the legitimate boot loader and a rootkit. And this is the reason why Windows 8 systems will ship with a certificate in the UEFI that analyzes the boot loader to ensure that it is both the right one and that is signed by Microsoft. If your system were to become infected with a rootkit, the UEFI won't boot. In other words, UEFI protects the pre-OS environment.

Window will restore the unmodified version if it detects that the system has been tampered with.

Do you honestly think the MAJORITY of businesses in America would still be using Microsoft if Microsoft has serious security issues?

Windows 8 is a very secure Operating System indeed and my Hat goes off to the Engineers at Microsoft.

Window 8 also works great using a simple mouse. I find it to be the slickest Operating System available. Also, the start button is no issue. I'm glad it's gone!

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

I haven't taken the plunge into win8. Win7 64 has been rock solid minus a few things I did that BSOD. From reading numerous posts about win8, am glad I didn't make that mistake. Kind of reminds me of iOS, which is why I abandoned OS X. Glad I know some linux. If microsoft ever killed win7, I would be 100% linux. But if you look how the OS's are going, seems they want all of us on this cloud computing crap. Able to kill anything from THEIR servers. Make us use what they think is good for us. Am praying linux doesn't go down this road but am afraid its already set in stone. I for one will stay out of any cloud computing for as long as I can. They currently cannot secure the data that they are holding now. Why should I trust them in the future. Looks like win7 is the new XP. For now, I will stay with win7.
Do any of you folks really want to trust microsoft, apple, or any OS with ALL your data? Much less adobe and others want you to subscribe to their apps so all of your work remains on their servers. I don't think so. I may be old fashion (started on DOS 3) but sure as hell don't trust any of them.
(sorry for the rant, got carried away)

Re: Windows 8: The Tips and Tricks

Bearcat that's the security I'm talking about

The OS (W8) might be secure but if as standard you have to be hooked into facebook, twitter, skydrive et al and all accessed through the one Windows/MSN password you are just one security breach away from having your life stolen.

Social Media great, if you like that sort of thing, but on our terms please.

+1 Tried Win8 beta and RC, thought it was awful for a desktop. Probably ok for a tablet.
