Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water 64 bit (June 13, 2012) Issues Thread

The six or so I got all finished with no issues. Just as an interesting note, one machine got both 32 and 64 bit units so I figured it would be good for comparison.

Bottom 2 are 64 bit ( v 6.12). A slight improvement on Ubuntu 11.10.

edit: Well, same as that was found for this device for C4CW, 6-8% faster. I'll take it.

--//--

Results for the octo-ht W7-64 are in too. Version 6.11 runs 1:13 hours average, the 6.12 Beta runs... 1:01 average. That's a whole 16% faster. applause \o/ applause What are we waiting for ;?

--//--

edit: Regarding memory worksets, On Linux 6.11 uses 245MB, on W7 277MB [higher than Lnx]. On W7 the workset is 355MB. Anyone beta testing and also connected to WUprop would be able to see the result ranges there in a while. [Just resumed WUprop, to allow it to catch data without me watching it. Now WUProp@Home 3.34 data_collect_v3 (nci)]

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water 64 bit (June 13, 2012) Issues Thread

Running on the same 64-bit machine the 6.11 application was about 10-15% slower than the 6.12 version.

On another rig I had problems to run 8 tasks concurrently due to memory swapping (only 2GB RAM)

[ot] Don't dare the wrath of a librarian for if you do... http://librarianavengers.org/worship-2/ [/ot]
Why are WCG converting to 64 bits: The original announcement explains when C4CW was converted [general performance improvement], and adding to that, the Linux crunchers in these cases would not be seeing tasks being disposed of because they don't have 32 bit libraries installed, ia32-libs to be precise. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_on_Linux. There are ever increasing numbers of ''pure'' 64 bit systems out there who now can contribute to more sciences... and more to follow (Don't think it's Windows based home systems owners worry yet). Does a pure 64 bit running system get slowed down by also running 32 bit apps at the same time? Not unlikely... the analogy I have is WIFI where 802.11N,B,G clients are mixed... the WLAN slows down.

And so it worked... activating WUprop and letting it log operating parms http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/ram.py?pla...p;tri=projet&sort=asc . Scroll down and see the RAM use stats of 32 v 64 bits on Windows and same for Linux http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/graph_ram....ater&plateforme=linux , operating about 33MB lighter.

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water 64 bit (June 13, 2012) Issues Thread

I got 8 units altogether, 2 version 6.11 on 32-bit machines, the rest were 6.12 on 64-bit machines. All finished successfully. For the ones on the Q6600 (64-bit) completion times were 0.80-0.81 as opposed to 0.90-0.91 for the current 6.11 app.

Got 2, both 32 bit one on a 32 bit system and one on a 64 bit system. Both completed without problem, times appeared about the same as production jobs.

Cheers

Simply because there are at least 2 ways to learn. ... Alternatively you can use Google and find out the answer to the question: "can you run a 64bit application on a 32bit operating system"
What I was asking was a question of reference and not a question of knowledge. You cannot google what any one may or may not have wanted or planned to do.

... One if to be told the answer to every little question without you having to waste even the smallest amount of time thinking about the answer and a second is to use your own mind and discern the answer yourself..
I do not speculate the technical matters surrounding what WCG-Techs may or may not have wanted or planned to do.

Re: Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water 64 bit (June 13, 2012) Issues Thread

Have 1 of these "BETA_cfsw_4000_04000038_1".
Let it run for 25mins, approx 30% complete. Closed BOINC and restarted, no problem as unit started pretty much from where it was when BOINC was closed.

Restarted my computer using the reset button, when BOINC restarted, the beta unit started from where it was before the reset (approx 30 mins 40%) but then the progress reset back to zero with the elapsed time dropping to around 25mins.

As a small aside, this also happened on the 2 normal C4CW units I have being crunched at this time (with expected completion time jumping up to around 9 or 10 hours) but the GFAM unit carried on without any issue.
