tomast -- so glad that you got everything working under Windows, and thanks for sharing your comparative crunching stats!
----------------------------------------My GPUs are kind of the opposite end from yours, but I'm finding the same comparison of AMD vs Nvidia for crunching. I replaced an Nvidia GT 430 with an AMD HD 7750. They are the lowest-end current-generation cards from the respective companies, and do not require an extra power supply. The 7750 is at least 3 times as fast as the GT 430 on Milky Way and Einstein. I do a little bit of crunching on a netbook with an AMD Fusion chip, the E-350. Its CPU component is a little faster than the an Atom at the same clock speed, and the GPU is a little faster than an Ion. It draws about 21 watts at the wall. Because it's a small netbook, heat limits how much I can crunch. It's a dual core, but if I'm crunching on the GPU, I can only crunch on 60% of one CPU core due to heat. I'm looking forward to AMD Trinity desktops coming out. I think they may turn out to be a very power-efficient way to crunch. Not the fastest possibility out there, but they may turn out to be extremely efficient. Can't wait to see benchmarks. ![]() |

The GPU is working great but the only problem is it isn't mine.
I have to return it tomorrow. I built that computer for a friend as a dedicated cruncher. i7 990x , HD7970 , 12 GB Ram , 1000w PSU... all in a $40 case. I am tempted to get a 7970 for my cruncher but I don't want to take out the NVidia card. I don't know if I could make both work together. Also I would only do it if I could use it with Linux. I think that would involve running a much newer Linux version / kernel and I kind of don't want to change from Mint 7. But I hear you have to run at least 7.x Boinc to recognize the 7970 and I don't know if the newest Boinc or the 12.4 CCC would work on the older system. |

I am having a Yin and Yang day here. On one side, I will reach 100 Million Credits at GPUGrid in about an hour. It took 5 years and has been a continual source of frustration. It is a major milestone for me. On the other side, I got this! PG&E energy statement (e-Bills) information Amount Due: $627.48 Due Date: June 8, 2012 It's starting to get hot and I will have to start shutting down some machines for the summer. ![]() Crunch on folks! ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dataman at May 20, 2012 3:25:23 PM] |

It's starting to get hot and I will have to start shutting down some machines for the summer. I've already started although my electric bills have not reached your level yet. I'm seriously considering going to GPU crunching only and selling off my high end CPUs that aren't needed for something more efficient. Congrats on you GPUGrid milestone DM.

I shut down all the 920's and idled all CPU's yesterday until about October. I moved 6 GPU's over to MW until around the end of June and then on to Einstein GPU. I only use the CPU's at WCG and then only for new projects and Beta's. I get a lot more crunch for the dollar with GPU's.(Best so far was 1.3 million credits one day using 14 cards.)I have a new funny GPUGrid badge today. I don't who thought this up or what they were thinking. Yesterday I had red, white and blue balls and today I have a yellow ball too. ![]() @Bearcat: Yep, one month. And last month was almost the same.@St.Joe: $0.38/ KwHr. Also Have a good day everyone. ![]() ![]() |

Hope you have a good paying job for those kind of electric bills. I'd be put underground by the other half if I had a bill like that. With the new gpu's using less electricity and more powerful, be wise to buy the latest and greatest for the long term. Of course if your OCing, won't apply. My 6950 does milkyway @1:40 total. Not to bad for this card. Turned down too. But the 7970 looks to be a sweet cruncher for the money. Should drop a bit more in price in a few months. AMD hopefully should be releasing a 7990 to compete with nvidia. Will be interesting to see that monster in action.

$.38/KwHr?!?
That's REALLY high. See why the bills get so high. Sorry to hear that. Not sure how they thought up the color for the balls, all I know is they represent amino acids and that's it Congratulations on passing 100M!!! |

$.38/KwHr?!? That's REALLY high. See why the bills get so high. Sorry to hear that. It's tiered. They give you the first electrons for free until they get you addicted and then the pushers raise the price. But I'll not rant about PG&E again today. ![]() ![]() |
